Full-Time Temporary (Seasonal) Forest Technicians

Prentiss & Carlisle, a leading forest management firm headquartered in Bangor, Maine, is looking for up-to three energetic and reliable individuals to work on a term basis as part of its Lake States Regional team. The P&C Lake States staff manages woodlands and provides timberland services in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to varied clientele.

Each position to be filled is a full-time temporary forest technician that will be working primarily on projects related to timber marking and cruising in northern Wisconsin and the western U.P. Some overnight work across the region may also be encountered.

Ideal candidates will have a solid work ethic, commitment to team success, high level of integrity, and be capable of completing work with limited supervision. Long days in varied weather and environmental conditions are to be expected and must be worked through accordingly. Traversing over rough and difficult terrain is to be expected. These positions will be paid by productive hour in-the-field with no benefits. Travel and lodging expenses will be reimbursed or pre-arranged on a per project basis by supervisor. Use of personal vehicle will be necessary, so a vehicle capable of transporting to/from work in the deep woods is highly preferable. Mileage will be reimbursed; travel time is unpaid. On-the-job training to P&C standards will be applied. All equipment will be provided.

Term Length: Mid-August 2013 – December 2013

Base Location: Rhinelander/Eagle River/Minocqua, WI area and Ironwood/Bessemer/Wakefield, MI area, reporting to the Lake States Regional Office in Rhinelander, WI

Requirements: Minimum of Associate’s degree in forestry tech or related natural resources field
Ability to identify, describe, and measure flora common to the Lake States
Ability to work 40-50 hours a week with limited supervision
Clean driving record and dependable, woods-worthy vehicle
Ability to use field data recorders/handheld computers and MS suite programs
Ability to pass pre-employment health screening and background check
Solid work ethic and commitment to team success

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related field from an SAF-accredited University
Experience marking and cruising timber in the Lake States or other region
Hands-on, in-woods field experience
Experience with ArcGIS 10 and ESRI suite programs

Hiawatha National Forest will be filling a permanent, year-round Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Preparation) position on the St. Ignace/Sault Ste. Marie Ranger Districts (also known as the Eastside of the Hiawatha).  The duty station for this position is the Raco Work Center located in Raco, MI.  The Raco location is 12 miles southwest of Brimley, MI; 50 miles north of St. Ignace, MI; and 25 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
 
Primary duties for this position include preparing timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout.  There may be limited supervision of seasonal employees.

PLEASE NOTE: The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to determine the potential applicants for this position.  This information will help us establish the recruitment method and area of consideration for the upcoming advertisement.  Responses received from this outreach notice will be relied upon to make this determination.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Those who are interested must meet the qualification requirements for the GS-0462 series.  The OPM Qualification Standards Handbook Manual is available for review at any federal personnel office OR on the Internet at http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/standards/group-stds/GS-PROF.asp .  Applicant must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower level.  Specialized experience is that which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. 

GS-07:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-06).
GS-06:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-05).
GS-05:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-04).

Forestry Technician (Various Locations Statewide)

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking several service oriented forestry technicians to fill vacancies around the state.  This is an opportunity to join the many men and women dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of Wisconsin’s forests and become part of a nationally recognized forestry program.
These positions reflect different combinations of duties that are based on forest type and fire risk landscapes. Duties encompass the following four integrated program areas: public lands management, private lands management, county forests management, and fire management.  Forestry technicians provide a wide range of services that include: prepare timber sales, prepare and recommend reforestation plans; control insect and disease attacks; provide technical services in support of forest tax law programs; perform fire preparedness, suppression, prevention, and training; operate and maintain fire control heavy equipment.

All Forestry Technician candidates must meet medical and physical fitness standards, possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, meet requirements to operate a state vehicle, and travel independently and on a timely basis.  Obtain and maintain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within the first 6 months of employment. Complete details on medical and physical fitness requirements and testing procedures will be sent to candidates that are invited to interviews. Forestry Technician positions with fireline responsibilities require that job holders meet and maintain annually the physical requirements of this position as a condition of employment.  Some positions with fireline responsibilities are required to respond, when directed, within 30 minutes to the work station for emergency situations.
 
Qualified candidates will possess a combination of technical and interpersonal skills. These positions require knowledge with applied forestry management techniques and practices including: forestry data collection, tree and site identification, forest regeneration assessment, forest aesthetics, silvics, and pest identification and control procedures.  Knowledge of basic forest fire management and suppression skills including: map reading, legal descriptions, safety procedures, suppression tools and use.  Techniques and skills needed to conduct maintenance on fire suppression equipment and facilities, and radio communication, equipment, and generally accepted procedures.  These positions also require effective communication skills, excellent customer service, effective decision making, and strong leadership skills in dealing with colleagues, partners, customers and the general public through individual correspondence, one-on-one meetings, and group presentations. We are looking for people with a drive for success and a desire to make a lasting contribution to their community.
