We have tons of them. Some are actual trees with several corner and line posts in them, but a lot are your typical hedge cluster. You can't hinge this one that goes right because the one in front is in the way and twists around so it leans to the back, etc, etc, etc. any brilliant suggestions on how to fell these thing without pinching my saw or dying?

Excavator with a thumb; pile & burn. Fecon type machine to macerate in place. Anything that cuts or saws will not be too happy with fence wire and staples.

Sawzall and a ladder.  Use a pruning blade for up high and a nail embedded wood blade for fence zone

Excavator with a thumb; pile & burn.
Quickest way to get it done and the mess tidied up. Yes it costs, but a good operator can safely get though in a day what would take weeks to do manually.
If you want to save any saw logs, drop them first and get the operator to simply put the good logs aside.

Hedge is one of those things that if someone really wants it, it is worth harvesting, but if not it is just a disposal problem.  I think you should start by making a good estimate of just how many posts you can get, and then figure what you can get for them.  With companies like Kencove selling treated posts by the truckload (some of them are pretty good), and the large amount of used oilfield pipe out there, your hedge may in fact not be worth the effort to harvest.  All markets are local, it's just that some local markets are a long distance away.  If you come out looking like it is worth cutting posts, by all means do it, but don't be surprised if the excavator with a thumb comes up the winner.

Here's a link to the High Plains Journal classifieds.  The fencing section lists several hedge post suppliers as well as several oilfield pipe sellers.  You should be able to get an idea of what yours are worth .

All, we're in Eastern Iowa. These are trees, not posts. Not sure I can count that high, but must be 100 of different sizes. We could probably get 25 corners 10' long and maybe 100 line posts.  But that's a wild guess. Plus lots of firewood. It appears corners at the right place are $35 and up, while line posts are $15-20. While the sawzall has appeal, I don't have 500 yards of extension cord. Lol
About the only thing I've come up with is to get in the front end loader and have her lift me up to clear some of the simple tops, which sounds a bit insane. I've probably done stupider things.

No need for a cord, just find yourself a Ryobi EJ100 sawzall its the only gas sawzall I've ever seen.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. I saw every piece of hedge I can find (called osage orange or bodock here). If it will make a 2X2 a foot long, I have a market for it..Duck calls and turkey pots..

I have done that - just get a safety harness ($50) and hook it to the bucket, not OSHA approved but it will keep you alive.

I had a whole bunch of overgrowth to remove, a pond to drain, hole to dig so I rented a Cat 312 for a week, 44 hours, 9 days with trucking cost $1662, worth every penny. It would have taken me 6 months to do the same with a chainsaw and a tractor. Now I do have a mess to clean up, but far easier with everything on the ground.

I love it for firewood!!!!
Where are you located?
Can you spare any?

Ianab

Got a good long wire rope? Cut the trees normally, and if they hang up, hook a cable around the bottom and drag them out from a safe distance? It can be a bit hard to predict how they come out, but at least you are more than a tree length away when it happens.

Make the rope long, incase the stump end gets caught up and the tree comes over in your direction.

Dont forget recurve bows
Yeah, the term "bodockor bodark" is corrupted slang for "bois d arc" which is french slang for "bow wood"

Sorry, ReggieT,
a., Iowa is a bit far to go for firewood
b. We're salvaging as many fence posts as possible, which cuts down on the firewood amount
c. We burn wood and have friends who want some too

Our neighbor has a mini backhoe. I finally broke down and asked him to help. A bigger mess to clean up, but an easier mess. And a whole lot faster.
