can anyone help with a formula for estimating bdf in a log?   thanks

There are almost as many formulas for estimating volume as there are types of trees.

The mathematical formula is just the start of the process.  It just takes in to input the diameter and length.

Logs of the same diameter and length may not scale the same when defects are taken into consideration and deductions made for same.

Here is a discussion we've had on the topic of grading and scaling logs.

Grade the log - sweep, crook, shell, rot, etc.
