Can anyone tell me what this is on our Sugar Maple?

We planted this one in our yard about 8 years ago. It may have had some of this last year - I don't recall. If it did, it certainly wasn't as widespread as it is now. IS there something I should do to counter this, or just let it go?

Thanks Don. Looks like this tree has a pretty good spindle gall  infestation.  Not much to worry about, especially since the tree seems otherwise very healthy.

This one has some sentimental value, since my mother-in-law gave it to my son when he was 5 or 6 years old.
