My tie beam going from my center post to my outer post will be and 8x10. On the side of the building I plan on doing a lean to. This lean to will serve as a car port. No insulation, minimal wood, and probably metal roof vs asphalt shingles for the main building. If I were to join the main tie beam to the lean to tie beam with a spline joint do the beams have to be the same size? I did the calculations and an 8x8 tie beam will be more then enough. The outer post will be an 8x8. Just seeing if I can change the beam size with a spline joint, or is their a better way to join this?

Follow the spline rules of thumb:

For the smaller timber if different heights so that you don't cut into the smaller one too much.
