The cost of harvesting is very important to understand.  Setting up and cutting one tree ties up a good bit of time and equipment in a residential setting.  There is no way that a logger can do it.  It takes a specialist, and that is what the tree service people do.  They are not timber buyers or in the timber business.

One local tree (called "hospitaltree" in my logmoving gallery) was a great example. Guy was a CFO for local power company "Mark".  He did his homework, called ALL around for loggers, mills etc,,..... in the end he realized NO ONE really wanted his tree, and as you could see from the pics it was a DANDY. clean straight, limbless, on and on. So, when one of my tree guys finally got on the site he told Mark to call me. It was just a few miles away near the hospital in between two houses. So, I explained to him the "economy" or lack there of, and he said "yup, I understand" I made him a reasonable offer to buy the tree, and it was done. He is now a great reference to refer folks to. He paid my buddy to climb it and drop it safely (took two and a half days, it was WAYY out over both houses), Mark cleaned up the mess, I got he logs for about half the dropping fee my buddy charged which helped Mark offset the cost. It really worked out all around.

as Ironwood says....if both parties can talk and realize the complexities it works,  My buddy pays the tree service to drop the black walnuts, he slabs them with a chainsaw mill, then calls me who then helps move the slabs and collects the smaller pieces and unique shapes...and some cash it all works out.

Waldoman has never called or PM'ed me, likely he was fishing. Some folks think their tree will fund a college education. A fella on my street thinks his smallish street walnut (within state right of way, they could chop it anytime they want) is worth $20,000.  ::) Guess I am just crazy.  ;)

It also could be that he is just away. A lot of people have places to go and things to do that last week before Labor Day. He's not logged on since the day after he registered, so odds are, that is the case. Give him a couple days.

Ironwood, I guess that I am crazy too, but in my case, it might be the boiled peanuts that did it, not a $20,000 walnut tree  :D.

From my experience, the problem with urban or any open grown tree is the growth rate.  Its too fast, and the growth rings are too far apart.  That's why the veneer buyers turn their noses up at fast growing trees.  There is no character to the wood when it is sliced or peeled.  Take away the veneer market and prices drop rapidly.  Especially at the wholesale level for lumber.

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Ironwood, sorry. I did get your message but am very slow at getting back and checking my mail. I will call you soon. Maybe I will get a shot of the tree to post as well. $20,000.00.......sounds good, where do I sign. No, I really don't think so but would like to get the best deal I can. Thanks everybody for all the input.

Waldo,

No worries, I am not going anywhere soon, my 100K pounds of iron and 100K of wood have me pinned here in Westmoreland County. I told my wife to just spread my ashes under the apple trees in the orchard.  ::)
