Last weekend went camping and used my 1/2 dried hard maple wood which put out a lot of smoke. :( Came home and thought I would redesign a fire ring so it won't smoke so much. Took a 55 gal. drum cut the ends out, then cut 1/3 off length. Dug a hole put 2' in ground left 6"sticking out. Started a fire and after a hour no smoke with the same wood. The tempture was a lot higher is why. I like cooking over a wood fire think it is the best. 8) 8)

i know what you mean...  my pit is made out of landscape block. .. the 99 cent ones..  4 rows deep.  only sticks up above ground 2 in.  those bricks get real hot... and still are good 3 years later.        i think it has to do with air flow ect..   it heats the ground and surround,  dosnt have a chance to freeflow the heat i guess.
