Linda

Thanks soooooo much everyone for all the input!

The order is now in for a Dell Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, DVD ROM, 3.5 floppy, Windows XP, 56k modem, Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (has MS Word), 36 Month McAfee Security Subscription with Virus Scan, Dell Printer, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, 1 yr warranty, and 6mo free of AOL.  For just under $800 delivered.  It was a little more than we had pooled together, but we wanted to make sure it would last her a few years.  Upgrading to MS Word was important, but cost $70 over the Corel Word Perfect that came with the system, and we figured that $100 virus protection was very important , since she will be on the Web a lot doing research.  Plus, we added an extra black ink cartridge. :)

We avoided a lap top, since she doesn't really need it and can't afford to buy batteries.

A lot of bang for the buck!  Computers have really come down in price.

She is unaware of anything; ;)  She will be thrilled to tears, if I know her well. 8)

Thanks again for all your help!!
