I'm going to do some remodeling on "this old house" ,take out a wall and use the back porch to add on to the den. I need about 21 ft of span to hang ceiling joists on ,and set a knee eall for rafters. Can I glue ,screw one up myself? should I allow for dwflection? Anybody know a site Where I can find formulas?
Just can't see paying $350 for one when I own a sawmill :(

Don't try to make a horizontal gluelam, you can't guarantee the joints strength and you only need to lose one.

A built up girder or a solid sawn beam might work if the loads aren't too big and if the wood is strong enough.

I agree, $350 would seem cheep in the event of  a failure. You would be better off making a solid beam.

Don P made this post a while back about plywood beams. Check it out and see if it would do what you are trying to do.
