A friend called and said the county was going to dispose of this old pine that they removed from a park.all we had to do was come and get it.I was a 75 yr old pine with the bark starting to slip at the base. It's great to save the wood in this tree rather than it going to the dump.

I got one like that last month from the state.  Had to dispose of it, after hitting the 8th nail that was in it.  :-\

Nice log for sure but, out of curiosity, how much did it cost you in fuel, time and equipment depreciation to run out and get that? I ask because when I had a Metavic trailer, I found that the cost of getting a single log was not worth the free price attached, even for hardwoods. Just wondering if you have better financial luck.

Brad-s to answer your question honestly  this log is far from free .It was  about 12 miles from my mill ,not too bad.The truck is depreciated out already ,paid for and the cost of insurance and repairs is about all i have to cover.I do most of the repairs my self.I have more than enough wood similar to this on the yard that i just don't have time to saw right now, busy farming, but for some reason i can't stand to see one this old go to a land fill.Besides i loaded up my bride and our dog and it was dirt roads most of the way .what a better way to spend a sunday morning.I like your thinking though

I agree slider. I want see something go to waste if I can help it. Those old ones give really nice #1 material from the inside and a few of my customers know I hold back a lot of this quality just in case. And I use it for my own projects.

That's the kind of rig I'm building right now. Sure makes it easier to go get them. Good score. Stay safe. Chuck

Slider, I think the only thing that would make that recovery even better is if you had stopped for Ice-Cream :D

Is your rig a Ford 9000?? Cat power?

Just sharing a pix of that free river tree i scored a while back. The trunk squared to a 20x20 but lost 2 in on one side due to rot.17 ft cut 566 board ft of great heart pine.the whole tree went around a thousand ft.

al glenn

Magicman

That is some wonderful heart pine.  Now since it's uses are tricky, what are your plans for it?

10-4 on the jealous button,  You boys down south have prime picking on the pine.  Just got to love it,  If the log is clean,  and you add 24 miles travel, plus an ice cream, cut out primo stock, sounds pretty free to me.
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

It was said that no free log is free which is true. But I did not hear log value figured in there.

Sixacresand

And the air conditioner in the truck is ice cold???   If it isn't, still a nice rig.  Wish I had one.  I love free logs.  Free trees inplies that you got to saw them saw them down and they are between the power lines and a just installed metal carport. LOL

What if you get paid to cut it down and haul it away, and it was an old red oak in a new development (that died from the excavation work) so you know it's probably hardware free. Is it free then?  ;D

That sawed out nice. I get a lot of those old growth around my parts and I will go get them anyway. I know an hour and a half is a long pull for three trees that will scale about  1200 to 1800 bf. each. But I want waste if I can help it. They are cooking dinner for the wife and I so $100.00 in gas on the old 1 ton is cheap enough for me. They are in two different places and they have loaders at both locations so all I do is cut them down and haul them off. Heading west as soon as I can to go get them.

Will try that picture thing again. Stay safe. Chuck

What is your rig comprised of? how much can that crane lift at full extension? Just building a "I can dream, can't I?" file... ;)

That is a very nice log truck, sure would make loading logs much easier. Does it pick up logs that big whole or do you have to get one end up at a time. The boards look beautiful too.

Poston, that had me laughing this morning. Always some comedy from you.  :D

Just goes to show that the only difference between a man and a boy is the price of their toys. That truck may be slow but it would sure beat a cant hook and timbers for ramps. would love to have one my self.

Qweaver

The cost of owning the equipment is there wheather I use it or not...so getting a free log does make the cost lower.  It still takes fuel and time tho'.  But for a nice log I'll make the time.
