cfarm I used to spend weekends at my gram's house when I was growing up, one of the things I always remembered hearing was the whippoorwill singing away as I went to bed. Very fond memories.
Up until last year it had probably been 30 years since I heard that wonderful sound. As I came in the house tonight the question of if I'd hear one this year was on my mind. I hope so.

Used to be some at grandfather's camps, big w. pine trees and rocky bluffs up there.

I used to hear them a lot in N. Fla where I grew up. I never saw one in the daytime to recognize it as such. The few times I saw them at night they were on the ground and their eyes looked like a rabbit except you'd see a pair of eyes and with a rabbit you'd never see but one red eye.

They are similar to nighthawks, I've seen all kinds of them. But not often at the house, mostly their migration flight at the end of the season. Saw a flock last year. Out in the woods I here them at night if I'm camping out. But I have flushed them from open patches in spruce plantation. They nest on the ground like a grouse.

One thing I have not seen in 40 years are chimney swifts.
