Not good. Maine is going to end up being  a major exporter of  raw fiber to other countries and other regions of the US. Whether it be logs or pulp or biomass. There will always be some niche value add companies but it is too costly to do business here I think.

It is not only Maine who is experiencing a serious decline with respect to markets for low grade softwood pulp.  NB went through the same scenario a few years back and now there are only a couple of softwood pulp mills left.  The reality is that the pulp mills in the east were built 50-100 years ago and are inefficient when compared to newly constructed mills.  We've been leaving most of our softwood pulp at the stump for a couple years now.   Really sucks when you are trying to do a good job and help the landowner realize a good return on his stumpage.

This and the news that verso is soon to file for bankrupty too! That was in bangor daily paper. All this news is going to drive the wood prices even farther down!!!

Ken is right about the age of the Verso mill. Everything has to be done quicker and better now.

Industry is moving to countries with cheap labor and no regulations and cheap natural resources. It is called "American Greed". The CEO's are getting their pockets lined.

Our "local" Verso mill is shut down for the short time while they install a new debarker. So they have filled up with wood and cut the suppliers off. So we have a couple hundred cord of pulpwood stacked up from last week with no where to go. Afraid to know what the price is going to be when they start taking wood again.

Just saw on the Bangor Daily that Old Town pulp announced it is closing too.

Lincoln mill received approval to keep the mill running from the bancrupcy court. Sounds like there may be hope for it. Small mill in a niche market. We will see. It's changed hands many times. If someone has the capital to fix the boiler it could work it seems.
