It seems to be such an array  of "SOP" standard operating procedure, in the choice of timbers.  I guess the variation of what is available in which ever certain area you live. Black Locust verses Honey Locust, pine vs. spruce, Ash vs. Oak.  Not having actually built anything, cutting many of the above for building projects, it is always fun to hear so many, have such different opinions.  I was just curious  how the builders here on the FF felt.  Do you simply work with what you have or do you seek out and hope to find without encoring to much cost?

Well traditionally buildings were built with whatever suitable timber was available locally. You can build with any of the woods listed (and dozens of others).  Of course you will want to modify your design to account for the different properties of the wood, which which why the guidelines get so comprehensive.
Weekend warrior, Peterson JP test pilot, Dolmar 7900 and Stihl MS310 saws and  the usual collection of power tools :)
