The 404 7 should be about the same size of the 3/8 8.  404 8 should be like running a 3/8 9,  I would think. Only cost you the $4 to try it out with 404 8.
I ran mine with a 36" 404 7 buried ripping and you couldn't stop it, but it isn't exactly stock either.

I'll certainly say it's not stock . :D

My buddy runs an 8 tooth .404 on a 42 " on his 084 and has no problems and his is stock . I run an 8 tooth .404 on both the 125 Macs plus the 2100 Homey on a 48" at times . Fact is an 8 is the only size they ever made for the Homelite in a factory type 6 pin drive . I have a pretty good idea if those old antiques can cut the mustard with an 8 that big Stihl ought to also .
