I see Congress is thinking about adding on 6ยข more for highway tax.  I hope they do it before the November election.

That would take some moral fortitude and backbone.  Not likely  ::)

Tom, you have hit a homerun again.  The price of oil, and therfore gasoline and other fuels, has been pushed to the point the consumer actually started to change behavior.  Now that the break point has been established we can look for prices to hover around $3.75 - $3.90 per gallon regardless of what the price af a barrel may fall to.  Of course if the price per barrel should recover and continue the upward trajectory the price of fuel will climb again.  What joy!  :-\

If by some miracle the American consumer would change their energy guzzling habits the above scenario could change...

I heard that the feds, since fuel consumption has dropped, are looking at an increase in the fuel tax to compensate in order to maintain roadways.
With most industry, in one manner or another, dependent on day to day use of current fuel, with tighter and tighter margins, the likelihood of any positive change is little more than a fleeting whim.

Quote from: OneWithWood on July 14, 2008, 08:33:05 AMPrice per gallon of diesel is holding steady at $2.17 at my favorite self service station  :D

Predictions are the price will drop a bit as the proprietor perfects a methanol recovery process.  8)

OWW, you're doing better than me... we have a little co-op here, I buy offroad B99 in bulk... I had bought some at the beginning of June, and it was $4.19 a gallon (after WA state sales tax)... four and a half weeks later, I bought some more, and it was $5.19 a gallon!

I keep thinking I don't have time to make biodiesel, but at these prices, I'm thinking I could make time...

Since the 9/10 of a cent painted on the sign doesn't mean anything (We don't pay attention to it, someone reciting the price of gas tells you the per gallon price and doesn't round up), perhaps the Government should take that marketing strategy and paint the road taxes on the sign.  It would do two things, It would cause the per gallon price to drop drastically, enabling the gasoline companies the opportunity to gather more profits with increased prices without the public becoming alarmed, and it would hide the road taxes so that the public would think they weren't being pig-stuck by their very own government.   In the end the results would remain the same, but everybody would be happy, just skipping along through the tulips, whistling and staring into the sky like the simpletons that the oil people and government think they are.  There would be strains of Tiny Tim's falsetto and mandolin on every street corner, and promises of a chicken in every pot, or pot in every chicken, or.....whatever it takes.  :P :D

That is what the government does not want ,Tom .   There is a law stating that gas pricing will include the tax .  The gov does not want you and the other consumers to know at a glance what they are sticking you with .  If there were not so many taxing bodies sticking it to the consumer I would say itemize the taxes with the total at the bottom .  But then the signs would be to tall to be in compliance with the zoning and building codes.

We need roads and I like the open roars. Don't like toll roads like IL, FL, and other States do. So will gladly pay the tax. Amounts to less than car Ins. in a year. ::)

Florida hasn't got much in the way of toll roads, Disney/aka Orlando does.  It's those who are new to the State who like to impose money making schemes like they had back home.   If you get off to the "real" Florida, you find that it is quite different than what the tourists see.

My point wasn't that the tax should disappear.  I'm sure, as smart as our elected officials have shown themselves to be, that it is going to good use.  I was suggesting that the price of gasoline (on the sign) could be halved,  in some instances, if the taxes were painted on the sign along with the 9/10 that nobody pays any attention to.   If that were done, Gasoline would all of a sudden go from $5.00 a gallon to $2.50 a gallon and the public would ignore the $2.50 9/10 that would be painted on the sign.

You would still pay the $4.99 9/10 at the pump that you have been trained to pay.      shhhhh-h-h-h--h---h----h  :)

Tom, I always round up (unless I forget). For example when I am looking at something for "$199.95", I say in my head it will cost me   $220.00 to buy it. I fibure 8.25% sales tax is close enough to 10% to figure it that way. When a guy brag about a good deal on a new whatever "I only paid $15,000 for that new whatever!"

Really? What did you do, create a farm account for that bass boat?

Huh?

Well didn't you pay sales tax on that bass boat?

Oh yeah but that don't count.

Oh really. Then tell your wallet because it's under the impression it does count.

That price drop was tax included.  :P

I think it went down $0.005/10 cents a litre this week, almost 2 cents a US gallon.

Just curious what gas prices are in different areas across the U.S.

This morning in Okla its went from 203.9 to 219.9 in one day.
Diesel is 235.9

way more than double since the original post or still ignorant...

I'm afraid the price is going to rise as our dollar seems to be slipping in value. Good for exporters, not so good for inter provincial trade.
