I was out showing the woods today with a friend that has not been back in the woods for years. While on one of the further most trails we came across this most beautiful yellow wildflower. It was 4 to 5' tall with slender elongated leaves. Only one we saw over our 70 acre trip. Any suggestions?

I've wondered too what their called Ernie.  ???

In fact, I came across so many scattered about, that I took pictures to post last summer and then never did ask.

I'll bet its an easy one for @OneWithWood   ;)

Looks like the genus Coreopsis from the Composite (sunflower) family.

Could be some type of Rudabeckia from the sunflower family, according to Linnea.

Does look like something in the sunflower family. Try Jerusalem artichoke. I always have trouble getting all the yellow sunflower type flowers to species.

Probably woodland sunflower Helianthus divaricatus. Adubon's book has a poor picture of it.

This might help.

Now that you mention it, we have desert broom,  Baccharis sarothroides out here. If you found a really old one, you might be able to get a 3X3 maybe a foot or foot and a half long. ;D
