Saw this at Merchants Millpond State Park near Gatesville , NC . Said its was found in a creek in 2010 .

I thought so to . Just think how long it took with a hammer and chisel . I'm going to try to get better pictures next time , it's in a plexiglass case and I can see my shirts reflection.

The mill was built in 1811 and they think this was one of the origin

Neat. That looks to be a tub mill, I guess the earliest form of water powered mill, very old simple tech. Its also known as a horizontal mill. That wheel sits flatways near the bottom of a vertical shaft and the water flows through it turning the shaft. The millstone is directly mounted to the top of the shaft, there was no gearing. Usually carved in halves out of elm with iron bands holding it together.

Edit; I was googling around and found a set of sketches the park service did in the 30's of a small tub mill in the Smokies, sketch #4 shows the wheel;

Foxfire 2 starting on page 142 has a chapter on making a wheel and a mill

When these things are set up right the miller can mill the print off a dollar bill.
