Title: Shrub ID help please... I'm stumped , in my son's backyard ...Texas gulf coast

 please help me , none of the plants I have found similar explain the purple nubs or curls that are a part of the leaf.. bit not on every leaf...

Welcome to the forum... My guess... galls on a myrtle. Hopefully someone can narrow it down a little more ...

Crush a leaf and smell it.  If it has a spicy smell, I second the vote on Persea.
