JD540b rearend

broke a rear axle today. is it easier to change the whole rear end assembly or just the planetary. also, if i do whole rear end are all the 540b rear ends the same gear ratio? bought a parts skidder with one.. will be doing it outside at wood yard

I do not know that, i have a 540A. it's alot easier to just swap axles!

Rear yes front no. As far as I know the ring and pinion ratios are the same but the planetary ratios are different on some depending on the year. I ran into this awhile back when the front housing broke off mine 5 or 6years ago.  Mine Has some mismatch parts in it now...
