what kind of tree has smooth bark and round leaves in arkansas?

The closest I could come up with online is birch or red alder, neither of which grow in northwest Arkansas (I think). Any ideas?

American beech, buckthorn, young basswood.

I think someone brought this up before with some buckthorn photos that Dodgy ID'ed.

Yeah, that to Arky.

They all die back to the ground here in the winter and after years of resprouting they resemble a clump of lilacs with huge leaves.  :D :D
