Title: Please excuse the dust in the air
Post by: Jeff on February 06, 2018, 09:41:30 AM
Some of you that have been here for much of the life of the Forestry Forum know that there have been changes along the road. Some of them rocky.  I've never been one to sit on my laurels, knowing full well from the beginning that as the forum grew and the internet evolved, we would need to do the same. The changes taking place now, like the new server, software updates and upgrades I realize cause our members some grief, but it is all being done for the betterment of the forum and an outlook for its future.  Believe me, I'm with ya on this. I like the comfort of familiarity as much as ya'll.  :)

I'm trying to make this as painless as possible for the members, but I can see that there is some aggravation. I assure you I understand it because when you are aggravated, you let me know, and I know because it isn't just you letting me know, it is everyone that is aggravated.

There are still some more things that are going to change. It is very important that the Forestry Forum's format changes some because of the fact that mobile devices are becoming the norm. Phones and tablets many times are how you connect with the forum, so that is something I am focusing on right now. I've done a few little things to move in that direction already. Some of you that do use mobile devices may have noticed. I will try to continue to make improvements, but in doing so, there may be times when things are in disarray. I'd equate this disarray to remodeling a living area or a bedroom, so remember it could be much worse. Like a kitchen or a bathroom!

Eventually the dust will clear and comfort and normality will return, so please, understand that I understand.  :)

I hate change more than most, but after a little while, it just becomes the new normal. As long as I can always get desktop view on my mobile device, I'm happy.  :) One forum I go to automatically sets the view based on the device,  no choice. You lose so much with mobile view. Their software is poor, anyway.

Dave, I am appointing you my test subject. If you see a change that is not compatible with how you view the forum, let me know. No, you don't have a choice. :D

Progress is good but sometimes painful (or dusty).  I would hate to be stuck in the past.

Do what ya think is best Jeff and no complaints from me.

Jeff, I see absolutely no reason for having to explain anything you (and/or others) do for this site, I don't complain and even if I did I'd have no idea what I was complaining about anyway because I know nothing about operating this stuff.  It's fun just to read and catch up with everyone, learn, learn more, and of course laugh a lot (oh, and get hungry along the way  :))!  Thanks for the ride!

I've got no issues with getting feedback on problems. That is how I know many times there is a problem in the first place. It would be advantages though, if people would take a look in the obvious places to see if something has been addressed. For example the trouble logging in issue.  I've addressed that now in multiple places and answered a whole bunch of emails.  Every time the cure was the same.  :) If after following the instructions given and it doesn't help. First make sure you followed the instructions correctly, then, by all means, if that doesn't work, let me know. :)

It should look different.  I've got an issue yet with phone view in portrait mode. The new tag column is missing. I have to get that worked out.  I don't like the way the posts look either due to the avatar placement.  A work in progress
Title: Re: Please excuse the dust in the air

Right now,  request mobile gets me the same view I've had for years.  If i select request desktop, i lose a lot of features and the avatars are on top of the post. A couple of hours ago, that was reversed.  :D

The only thing I'd like to see different would be picture posting straight from my phone. Last couple times I tried it said it wasn't compatible or something. Been a while since I tried though so may have already changed.
Title: Re: Please excuse the dust in the air
Post by: Jeff on February 06, 2018, 08:27:53 PM
It has always compatible. Most of us do it every time we post photos. Its probably because you have your picture size set so you can print a billboard instead of a normal size a web server can handle.

OK, so what's with the tumbling arrows (making a circle)?  It showed up next to my username a few days ago now it is at the end of the menu.  After a while, it turns into a tree (I think that is what it is supposed to be) that flips upside down when you hover over it.  Inquiring mind(s) want to know!

Edit:  Ah, now you can click on it!  Alerts notification popup.

Re: Alerts

Jeff,  So I had two alerts.  One from the above quoted and the other announcing Bearcat.  The one for this thread I could click on the bolded title and get me here.  I did that this morning - yet the alert remains this afternoon.  Is it supposed to?  The alert for Bearcat (I am NOT subscribed to any subforums that I am aware of) was not "clickable" anywhere.  Is that correct?
Title: Re: Please excuse the dust in the air
Post by: Jeff on February 07, 2018, 04:54:25 PM
The alerts will stay in your alert box until something pushed them out. If you don't have a red number beside the alert icon, you should not have any new alerts.  If you are not sure, refresh your page. Also notice, when you open the alert box, there are to links at the top, one says more alerts, that lets you look at all alerts you have received. the other is to the settings so you can set what you want or dont want alerted on.

I know the picture posting thing has been hashed to death, not complaining here, on my laptop I get it done, but on my phone it opens up tab after tab and it's a guess if I got the picture to post or not, usually I fear the same photo will show up 3 times is my bigger fear. Is there something I am doing wrong on the phone or is it just the way it is?

Jeff, Somewhat related to Dave...  I always prefer the desktop view on all devices.  On my PC, it always opens in desktop view and that's perfect.  However, on my iPad, it always opens in the mobile view.  I can change it to desktop view and it works.  But if I close and open again it goes right back to mobile view.  Seems like you should be able to set a preference?

It is because as I've said several places. You need to delete your cookies temp files and bookmarks!  Then come back to the forum and your preferences will stay.

I think there is a misunderstanding about what I am doing. The forum is being rewritten as responsive. Removing the need, unless you want it, to use the mobile version. Just by changing the size of the device, you now get much more mobile friendly options. Fonts that are easier to read, drop down menus that you can easily see, and other advantages.

Is the page changing so fact you don't know you have changed pages?  The box will always revert to saying Recent post menu. That is the label for the box, not the page you are on...

Not sure how it could not be working for you.

Ok - so I am responding from my laptop to make it easier, I got out of the forum on my phone, then back in.  I tried all the options in the pop up box, they all work, except the "new replies" - that one just brings me back to what ever the present screen is on.  I even went VERY gingerly with the mondo hands - no difference.

You still have me confused.  There is no selection titled new replies. There is one titled "new replies to your posts."

There is no reason for the links not to work if they work on your laptop. The links never change, just the format on smaller devices. It works on my phone, it works on Tammy's phone, it works on her tablet, it works on her tablet standing on end, it works on the P.C. with the window slid almost closed so that the drop-down menu is exposed.

Do all three of these links work?

@Southside logger (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=24297) You were right!  There was a problem that I found when I was trying to add more links to that. Not complaining, grateful to be here.  Sorry if it sounded so.  Maybe someone can tell me how to get around this problem on my iPhone.   I have made some pictures of what is happening to illustrate that I find it difficult to type in posts on my i-phone because I can't see what I'm typing.  I have cleared my history and cookies etc in Safari.  This is what happens.

(Photo below)  I have the cursor positioned to type, no problem.

(Photo below). Immediately after the first keystroke the FF frame resets to this (and I continue to type some more not seeing what I am typing):

(Photo below) I type another keystroke and the same thing, I can't see what I am typing.   It is very tedious for me to post text.

That looks like the old mobile view from the link on the bottom of the page, not the responsive view I am working on.  What does your forum look like on the index page?
Do you mean this page?

:D :D Yea, that.  You are not even using the work I have been doing. I have not touched that. It is the way that it has always been. Go to the bottom of the screen and click full site.  Make sure you delete all of you old cookies and stuff first in case you have not done that on the phone.

Don't think I've felt this way since I forgot my pencil first day of 7th grade.   :-\ :-\ :-\.     I thought i was on top of things since I have Accuset 2.

Reread comments up to Weekley post above.  Lesson-don't use the mobile version and fix your phone so mobile version doesnt come up anymore.   I was deleting history & cookies but now went back and actually deleted my treasured FF bookmarks, cleared history, cookies on my laptop and phone again, since they share bookmarks via i-cloud,  and restored new ones.  Now I get the full site on my iPhone.

a tough time keeping up.

Jeff,
A question about the notification arrows (the ones chasing each other's tail):
When I first come on (I use Show New Replies to Your Posts as my link), the arrows just go and go and go.  They never seem to stop and change to the tree.  When I click on a link in my list, sometimes I see them change to the tree (and possibly a red number) if the screen doesn't change too fast and then the screen changes to the post I clicked on.  While it is loading that page, the notification tree is usually present (and possibly a red number) and the page jumps down to the most recent post (like it should).

If I scroll back to the top, I can click the notification.  If I hit Back to go back to the "new replies" screen, the notification arrows start chasing again.  And the process repeats.  Rarely, it seems, the arrows switch to the tree (the hot link).  Is that code chewing up CPU?  When you posted the Wayback link, I could see the Notifications process running a lot.

Edit:  Wasn't the Wayback thread - some other thread...

It's because you are using back. Back means back. Back a page is the same as back in history and back in time. If it sticks, refresh. This may happen if you have the forum open in multiple tabs as well.

Post by: Ljohnsaw on February 12, 2018, 08:54:46 PM
OK.  I figured Back would take me back to the Cached content of that page, saving a query to the DB.  Guess not.  If I hit my FF link to take me to a "fresh" Show New Replies, I get the same chasing arrows that go on for as long as I watch.  Just trying to figure out if this is a bug that is wasting CPU cycles on you.  The only time I have multiple tabs for the FF open is when I'm adding pictures to a post.

If the arrowed circle is flashing, it means you are not connected to the website. Usually a disconnect from going back in time.

Not sure if that is an auto correct or not.  No, not flashing, chasing (going round and round).

OK, here's a new one!  I don't know what I did, but when I got a notification (red box with white #1 in it), I clicked on the lollypop tree and then the link.  Now my FF bookmark in my bookmark menu has changed - it is the FF logo (green tree in front of the sun?) but has a red box with a #1 hanging on the right bottom!

You can get alerts for things even if you are not on the forestry forum webpage, but on a different one. One of the thingsthat happens is, you get a red spot in the forestry forum favicon (address bar icon). It coincides with the red number by the tree. If on another site, you may get a corner screen notification too, assuming you selected to allow notifications from the forestry forum.

OK, but the Favicon is still showing the "1" after I've acknowledged the notifications...

The only hicup I see is probably my fault. Some times I click on
the orange NEW box beside the post the screen changes to the new post
but it sometimes goes to far down the screen and I have to move up to read
the beginning of the post. I don't remember it doing this before. It only
does this about 1/3rd of the time.

What did I tell you about the line breaks in your posting? You agreed not to do it! It blows the format on mobile devices! QUIT IT!

The jump is a bug due to the addition of the related topics that appear under the posts. I am looking for a fix.

This is going to sound strange but I think I've narrowed it down to the FF...  I'm running FireFox 58.0.2.  When I visit CraigsList and view an item that has multiple pictures, I can hover over the edge of the first one and click the arrows to scroll through them or hover over (or click) the thumbnails and that changes the full size one.

After some time of viewing the FF (maybe related to clicking on alerts??), when I go back to CL, the pictures act funny.  Hovering no longer works and the arrows to scroll went away.  If I click on a thumbnail, it goes to a new page and has just the picture.  I have to hit back to get to the CL post to look at any other pictures.

If I close the browser completely, it all goes back to normal.

Any ideas?

I think I've narrowed it down further. It's your computer. If you think it's the alerts, shut them off.

OK - how about this?  You did a ton of work to make the FF much more mobile friendly.  Talking with my daughter, the odd behavior with CL is what she sees on her phone (a mobile device).  I'm running windows 10 which is supposed to be mobile ready or mobile friendly or something like that.  Is it possible that my machine is seeing something that makes it go into "mobile mode?"

I will say that on my phone when someone puts emocions in a post sometimes they flash and actually appear in the post and above it flashing on and off.  Not all the time, just sometimes.

Our site has nothing to do with Craigs list. Id suggest once again, if you have any display issues, dump your cache. I've made a lot of changes and if your computer is caching files that I have touched here, it might cause an issue.

The animated gifs smiles may flash when they are resized. Just the nature if those things.

All of a sudden, the Forum is in BOLD.

Note, the BOLD that is in bold, is no different then the other text when I post.

Yes it was!   Amazing the power of a missing /  eh?    I added a script to countdown to the Forestry Forum pigroast and inadvertently forgot the / in the closing bold tag which left everything after the script bold. :)

It's even worse if you are working within the php code and somehow omit a '   or a "  somewhere. Everything breaks and you have no idea why.

Jeff -

Is there a trick to putting the emocions into posts when using an android phone now?  They don't want to click and drag or just click and appear.  Not sure if it's just my phone or something changed.

Thanks

Jim

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I THINK I HAVE SAID THIS once before!

You MUST delete all cache (history) and cookies after the changes. That means your phones too.  Your phone has an old file cached somewhere not allowing the new functions to work correctly.

Jeff this is a test.  If I do a highlighted quote and then pick a Smiley like the this:) from the top menu, it appends it to the last word and does not display properly (but shows up as I'm typing correctly).  I have to hit a space before picking the Smiley, like this :).  If, however, I just do the normal Quote the entire post and pick a Smiley, it pre-pends and post-pends a space so it always displays correctly.

Just thought you would like to know and maybe fix?

EDIT: it does not post-pend a space - I made an ASSumption ::)

smileys appear via a code that represents them. If you don't put a space between your text and the smiley in a wysiwyg editor, then the smiley code is part of the word you typed.  There is nothing to fix. Its simply the way you are using the new editor. If you don't want to use the editor by default you can click on the first button on the left on the editor menu and use the old code style system. I've never run into the issue because when I type, and then add a smiley, I add a space, just like I would if the smiley was a word.

But typing here I just click on one of the smileys above and it appears like :) and I did NOT type a space after the work "like" but I do hit a space after it like a normal word was typed.  Not really an issue, just that it works "different" between the full quote and the new highlight quote (which I really like!).

Just started happening a week or so ago. I tap the reply button and the window opens with it already there.  I just delete it and carry on so it's no big deal.
