My saw wasn't cutting straight so My dad and I took the chain off and decided to squeeze the grooves together since the chain was moving a lot side to side.  We used calipers to see how thick the guides were then got a feeler guage with a little more width and inserted it in the goove and hammered it together. (the feeler guage kept if from getting too tight)  It took a while but we got it a lot better.  (saw cut like a dream)  The only problem with all this is we pretty much destroyed the feeler guage.  Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks

Congratulations on spotting the problem and narrowing down the solution. :D
Bailey's and other companies carry a handy device called a bar rail closer. You dial in the gauge, then roll it across. It acts as a controlled wringer.
Gotta know when to fell em, know when to tell em, know when to walk away, know when to run....

Oh no webgal. I am a tool nut and now you have just posted one I don't have or knew about. Problem is getting to be not what I have but what I can find.
Give me a new saw chain and I can find you a rock in a heartbeat.

Unless money is real tight, use a dime in a .050 bar and a nickel in an .058. :D

My bar maintenance at this point in the winter consists of daily visits to my spirits cabinet.
Doesn't help the saws but calms the disposition.

I guess bar maintenance could be fixing all the tables and chairs after the biker gang left.  ;D

I was trying to make a joke about the difference between US and Canadian coinage thickness.
