Just thinking about some table projects, I cut them 8/4, because I have never worked with either species before but have heard they tend to do the wave if cut to thin. I do not have a kiln so air dry to about 12% is all that I can get here in SC.

Today I/we have been "making ready" for my road trip return next week.  Dull blades boxed, sharp blades ready, new Debarker blade, new power feed belt, chainsaw gas/oil, ATF, marking paint, wire brushes, & Diesel.  PatD has been busy with my laundry.  Nothing exciting, just check items off of the list.  Anytime that I am sawing that far away from home, my comfort level gets stretched.   ::)
Hi, How many hours do you find the debarker blade to last?

This is my fourth Debarker blade in over 16 years of sawing.  I have a few missing teeth so I need to get the torch/silver solder out and do some transplants.  I would think that the rounded/dull teeth could be flipped over and use the other side/end which is square.

Normally dull doesn't matter much but these logs are so heavily and deeply encrusted with caked/baked on red clay sand that I am hoping that a new blade will help.  We are averaging completely wearing out a wire brush per day.  Even so we will still brush/clean the back side of the logs.

I know that a new blade will really cut deep and sling chips like a tornado.  :o

All of this property has been excavated, rearranged, and leveled for the condos. All of the trees were felled with a trackhoe (stump and all) and no attempt was made to keep the sand off of the logs.  I was actually horrified a year ago when I made my first trip and saw the logs.

Nothing but sand.

So we just brush and saw.  ;D

Getting through a hot summers day will be a concern here in a few months but right now the concern is getting through the snow.

MM, have you tried just reshaping the carbides? Probably breathe new life into the blade if you have enough carbide still exposed. Biggest problem is you need a special grinding wheel for it.

Magicman

I think that it takes a "green" wheel or something to resharpen them.  I have kept all of my old blades just in case I ever decide to get into the refurbishing business.  All three of them have teeth missing hence the need for "dental" work.  ;D

I hand-hold the grinder used for my Peterson, "baby jolly" which has a diamond rimmed wheel on it, to the face of the WM debarker blade, to sharpen it.  It does help though to just grind the face free-hand.

Trouble is these debarker blades get quite rounded over so one is tempted to grind not only the face but the top, to get the top corner square again.  Top edge grinding  really ought to be done with some level of precision to keep the diameter the same all around.

I would imagine one could use a diamond wheel for a 4-1/2" angle grinder which I think are available at HD and Lowes to do face grinding, those aren't that expensive.

I never checked but I bet any shop that does carbide re-tipping would probably be able to replace the debarker tips for less than the price of new.  I've had 6 tooth 26" diameter Peterson blades retipped for $50-60 including postage so those little debarker blades might come in a lot less.

One if the lessons of the last few years for me is that its essential to maintain the sawyer not just the saw.

I saw what there is to see of my sawmill and and that my friends is all the sawin' I've done.

The only sawing that I did today was seeing two "sawbones".  The Echo-cardiogram showed all of the valves operating correctly and no abnormalities.  The Dermatologist froze 7 pre-cancer spots and took a biopsy from another spot of greater concern.  We will await the results before deciding what to do with that one.  I will have a Cardio-PET scan done tomorrow morning.

All of this being done while the sun is shining bright and it is forecast to rain all/most of next week.  :-\
