Help me Identify this native Maine tree
« on: September 20, 2017, 03:51:31 PM »
Hello everyone, I live in Maine and would like some help identifying this tree. The Bark is similar in appearance to my sugar maple and American beech color wise however the bark is more coarse and not smooth. The leaves are similar to that of a beech except more narrow.

I don't know. But welcome to the forum.
What part of Maine are you from? Trees by the coast I don't know much about, like white oak.
I have this book from the Foresty Dept.
Forest Trees of Maine
The link to order is on the lower right. I ordered mine and they sent me a book with a bill.  :o I like it for the Latin names.

I'm just gonna take a wild guess at it and call it a black ash.

Leaves look like they could be ash but the bark is not right for black ash.  Gary

Black ash seems most likely.

Looks like black ash to me.

Is the bark kind of corky or spongy feeling?
