It's amazing how fast those elm break down in the forest once they die. There was a 44+ dbh one in the neighbor's woods that died after every other tree was logged off. That was a little over 20 years ago. I saw what remained of it a couple years ago on the ground and it was just about all consumed into soil in such short time.

Gary, We have plenty of live and thriving elm trees. In the U.P. a few miles from our property there are some really big ones standing out in the middle of some pastures.  The leaves pictured are from the one in my Sister's yard her in the lower peninsula. Its an awesome shade tree, but its an isolated specimen, probably why it's alive and well.
