hi, members of the forestry forum, I have some 40inch elm logs that i want to make a few tables out of, I was looking for a saw to power the mill, I already have two XPs (372, 550) but i was thinking of giving Stihl a shot (since i have never owned one) or a husky, witch ever is best, thanks!   :snowball:

A Stihl 660 could do it but a Stihl 880 would be the best.

If you're gonna consistently mill 40" plus, you're gonna want a Stihl 880 or a Husky 3120. 395xp maybe...
And an auxiliary oiler setup regardless of what saw you use.

48" alaskan, for max cut you'll need a 60" bar?

I believe the biggest square that fits in a 40" perfect circle is 28.29" on a side.  That's real close to the max cut you can get on a 36" bar after clamping, if that's any help.  An xp 395 can do that.

You wil want the most saw you can get.  40" of Elm is some serious milling. 3120 or 880, unless you go with an older vintage saw 090, 075, or other some such large saw.
Turbosawmill M6 (now M8) Warrior Ultra liteweight, Granberg Alaskan III, lots of saws-gas powered and human powered :D
