Jeff, how about a like button for the comments.  I read some stuff that needs a LIKE! Or a LOVE!

But then again maybe Im addicted to facebook too.  Who knows?

It is something I have considered. I have hesitated on such a system for a couple reasons. First, the Forestry Forum is vast. There are so many older topics that deserve "likes" that once found, people might think it was undeserving to read simply because it had not been liked, when in reality, it was never liked because the like system was 15 years newer than the post.  That leads up to a second reason that can be applied to the first.  I'm not sure what impact such a system could have on the server. That could potentially be a lot of taps on the database.  Then, say we did implement a like system, and grew the database to show all of this. I'm nut sure it is something that we could keep in the not to distant future. The reason for that is, that the SMF software that the Forestry Forum runs upon is currently being completely rewritten in a new revision. I'm not sure what that new software version if going to have for options, and what it will take to include a modification to an old version, if it can be done at all.  This then puts you in a position of, should we sacrifice an old forum tool to move into the future, to keep up with the way the internet evolves, or do we stay where we are at and hope we don't become obsolete.

I've had that happen a couple times in the life of the forestry forum, and for this old mill rat, it's an ordeal. So, what sounds good as a request, may have many implications that you might never think of. Maybe things I shouldn't worry about, but I do, for the sake of the forums future. I've always tried to think 4 or 5 years into the future, and sometimes in internet years, that is way to far. Things can change in months sometimes.

I'm not saying I won't try this, I'm just saying, I have, and am still, considering it.

My mind just cannot go that deep Jeff, But I do understand what you are saying. You always have to stay 1 step ahead of invention. (old saying)

Personally, I don't like "like" buttons.

Seems to end up that without a bunch of "like" hits, it turns into a huge negative (i.e. a dislike).

But each to their own.

Good point Brother Been.....plus a like button may take away a lot of comments we may learn from.

That is exactly another reason I forgot to mention that I had mulled over.  Rather than someone making a comment that might add some good conversation or ideas, they might take the easy way out and click a like button.

I don't like "like" buttons either.  There are always people that just click "like" on everything, so much so that they can't possibly be reading all their likes.  Then there is the quality of response that a like button cannot deliver.  Did you like it because you can relate?  Did you find it funny?  Did it make you sad?  What exactly is like supposed to represent.  Then it becomes the popularity contest to see how many friends and likes you get regardless of the quality of the post.  Finally, the guilt if you don't "like" their "like" back.  It never ends.  I come here to escape that mindless clicking.   :D

How about if you like something you read, but don't have anything to further contribute, you click reply, " :)" and post.  Three clicks, and you're done.

If I'm on the stooopid phone and can't type a long reply, I will sometimes use  8) instead of trying to fight the phone. If I really want to add something, I will wait until I can get to a PC to type something.

Try it out for 6mo.-1year. If the comments above are right take it away. You could do a poll... right now it look like about 100% don't want it

SE talks like that would be such an easy task to just whip it on here for a trial run..   don't think so.
Go with the comments as appears we have many ways to show appreciation for posts, and using our "words" is much better than a quick hand signal or "click".

Log in another dislike for the 'like'.

If it's worth 'liking', it's worth a few additional keystrokes.

I'd vote "no" on the like button.

At first it seems like a good thing, but I got to thinking about it and figured some would just use it to "up" their post tally, instead of what it would have been designed for.

Maybe if it didn't change ones tally.  :-\
