Yup, I did it dude! 8)...    my 5 yr old gate way wasn't workin well. Kinda crapped out,couldn't get half of what was on the forum w/out getting kicked off line.
Now I have a Demension 4700 w 17" screen , 512 MB ddr2 sd ram 2x 256 MB DIM, combo cd-rw dvd drive and a whole lot more alphabet soup too boot !! Did I jump in too deep,or am I in for a ride

From all accounts I read, they are nice machines and reliable. Don't quote me on that because there is good and bad batches in all brands. Some are mostly bad. :D ;)

I've still got my first Dell, it's number 3 on our home network, it runs Win 98 and does wel enough for all the kids needs, mostly for mopping up spilled drinks!!! :(

 bull you've got a pretty good machine there i get a few to work on but its mainly from ppl downloading what they should'nt  :D they only thing i've seen go out is the onboard ethernet
card on them.

We're on our 2nd Dell which we got late last summer.  The 1st one lasted over four years and still did the job but we needed to update while Dee was still in grad school so we could write it off ;).  This one's an 8400 with all the bells and whistles and a 19" flat monitor.  We love it and I'm sure you won't be disappointed with yours.  Now if we just had a high speed ISP we'd be all set :( :

This is my 2nd Dell, lot of problems, downloads, not hardware.

# 1 is still setting on a desk in the corner with my check book and anything else that I think I need on it, all business, won't talk on the net, all it it does is keep track of what is put on it, used to do all the billing for a small business from it. Keyboard went out on it a while back, soda pop, called Dell, gave service tag #, guy said didn't sound right, I agreed, too short a number, he punched it in, told me my name and sent me a new keyboard.

My normal job is as an ITS for a casino, we have 150 computers on our network all Dell.
The Dells work good for us most common problem is hard drive failure & ethernet. Dells are reliable & stable.

hey bull, What kinda problems did ya have with the gateway?
We pretty much consider our gateway a piece of ... Well a huge pile of ... a steaming bunch of... Hmmm. Well.I can say I will never buy another one.

The latest problem is the cd/dvd that we replaced 18 mos ago quit working, even though we bought it ( the new cd/dvd) from gateway, since it didnt come with the original system they wont tech support it.

Kevin H.  where do I start...  Would not recognize my printer(s). ran multiple programs at the same time , would shut down and startup on its own - would run out of memory halfway through a written document before you could save it. Wouldn't allow me to use " The Forum" and that was the final straw...... Also it would not clear or uninstal  info,programs  that you uninstalled. Also loved the Trojan horse virus,I think it had its own version....  I have Norton,Spyzapper,and every other GD protection and it didn't help. Now the kids will get the Gateway my daughter has a friend who says he can rebuild it......  and he'll do it for her for free,
everyone I called wanted $100.00 per hour and would not commit to how many hours. If I were to pay for it to be fixed I would still have the same POS down the road, it was serviced 3 times before the warrantee ranout...

One of my friends swears by Gateway to the point that he's just bought another one and he campaigned really hard to get us to try one.  I've got another aquaintance who has done nothing but swear at her Gateway since it was new.  I like my Dells 8)

My first real computer was a Gateway Pentium Pro 200 that I bough in 1996.  It is still going strong today as I am using it right now to cruise the internet and the Forum.  It is to slow for the new programs so I built a new one myself.  That one is not hooked to the internet and I use it for the business only.  I have heard good and bad about both Gateway and Dell, but I built my own computer as now most of the big companies use propertary hardware that makes working on or upgrading them a headache.  But if I were to get a laptop I guess it would probably be a Dell.

I think the entire USAF uses Dell for performance and reliability....

and cost effectivness.

Ed Im still on the krutches and going to physical therapy 3 days a week its only been 6 months as of 3/12.  Orthopedic doc said 8 months. on a good day i can walk for about four hours without to much problem, if i push it , im down for the next day. SO i GUESS its doing pretty good... Say hi to Chuck if you see him     Mike
