Title: Picture Posting on Forum Help
Post by: Jeff on March 13, 2012, 03:10:25 PM
First of all, Offsite Photos and links to offsite photos are not allowed on the Forestry Forum. If you want to share your photo, it MUST be placed in the Forestry Forum gallery and then placed in a post. Directing people to your gallery is also not allowed. The gallery's only purpose is to archive photos used in posts. Photos not used in posts are not to be uploaded. Deleting photos used in posts id not allowed and considered destruction of forum property

We've created some simplistic videos that should explain the processes of setting up a gallery, posting a photo, and creating a link to your gallery in your profile and posts. Please excuse my spelling in the Tutorials. :-\

1. Preparing your Gallery.

Before you can upload a photo and post it, you must create at least one album in your gallery so you have a place to put the photos. You can create one, or as many as you like. Some people like to stick all their photos in one album, some like to be neat. I happen to be not so neat.  The following video will show you how to do this first step. It explains step by step, then it shows a video example of the actual process.

http://youtu.be/1krA1Op7C0U

2. Uploading a photo and placing it in your post.
An explanation, then example. If the descriptions go too fast, simply click on the video to stop it.

http://youtu.be/yBuBcMz3Iik

3. Adding a link to your gallery to your profile and posts.
An explanation, then example

Thank you for the help. The problem I am having is figuring out windows 8. I have not yet educated myself on how to save a picture other than having it as a tile. I will figure this thing out.

I am having some trouble figuring out windows 8 also.
If you're downloading the pictures from your camera.
Open the camera card up after you have it plugged into usb.
Click on the picture and drag it into the picture file icon on the left.
It is under the Library folder.
You can open that on the bottom left when you have your desktop screen up.

Good job, Just remember, The gallery is not for uploading photos too, and saying "go look in my gallery". Only photos that are put into a post go in the gallery. You upload the photo, link it to your post, then never ever delete it or it will screw the post up.

Hey Jeff
The new photo up load system works great even for computer cripple like me.

I haven't watched the videos but your written instructions are very well done and I was able to get it figured out with just a bit of help from my son. Great work and thanks.

FYI. You may need to install a larger storage system as I have about 2000 and rising saw mill photos and about 60,000 other photos that I am sure every body would enjoy.  ;D
Title: Re: Picture Posting on Forum Help
Post by: Jeff on January 11, 2013, 10:13:10 PM
It's hardly new. It's over a year old not.
FYI
I'll say it again, as I've said elsewhere multiple times. The gallery is not for personal storage of photos. The only photos that should be in a member's gallery, are ones that appear in a post. The Gallery is the spot to hold the photo so it can be in the post, or so that it can be used in any subsequent posts if needed. That is the only reason for existence, other than being the means to make sure the Forum's Topic integrity remains for perpetuity.

Yes, I created a new album "Woodshed",   I watched the video, but it's blurry and hard to see what your clicking on.   When I click on the pic. and then on open and when it goes back to the gallery page the pic.# DSCN0074 is not in the box but something like "C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Do"   this and I can't remove it and paste the pic. # in the box.

Plug in camera, download picture in my FF folder on my computor,go to My Gallery, click Upload File, select an album, browse in my FF folder, choose the picture I want, open it and it downloads and resizes it into what ever album I selected. I hope I did not leave a step out. This is it in a nutshell. I'm sure don't know what I am doing, but members helped me way back when.

If you have really selected a file to upload, check that the server allows file uploads...

This is the error message I receive when I try to upload a photo.  I think I'm following all of the directions that are posted.  What server is this referring to?

Are you trying to upload a ridiculously large photo?  Many of the camera and phones now can create huge photos. Odds are you have the photo size so large that even with the generous size we allow, it is too big.    New camera? New phone?

You are right, the picture was 7.0 MB on the new camera.  I re-sized it to 4.9 MB and it finally uploaded. Thanks for the advice, now I know what to do to upload the rest of the photos.

Dean

Appears you don't have any pics in your gallery, not even in 2014.

So you need to add an album name in your gallery as a place to put your pics. Then upload them by clicking the line below that says "Click here to add Photos to post" and a new window pops up, choose which of your albums you want, and then browse your computer for your pics for uploading.
After that, when you click that line "Click here to add Photos to post", you will select "my gallery" from the menu and click on the pic you have already there, then scroll down below the enlarged pic for the "Insert image in post" button.

Let us know where this fails and we can get you more help.

I attempted to load a few pics into my gallery a moment ago. The album is entitled American chestnut. I'm trying to display pictures beginning with the hand hewed reclaimed beams, and ending with the finished product. Trouble is this album is showing several pics that do not belong to me. Is this a system error, or operator error? Please advise.
Title: Re: Picture Posting on Forum Help
Post by: beenthere on August 26, 2015, 12:27:55 PM
Looks like your album in your gallery only has your pics in it. There are 6 of them.

To put them in your post, then click the line below "Click here to add Photos to post" and a window will open, go to the menu list for "My Gallery" and you will go there. Click the pic you want, it will enlarge. SCROLL down a page or two below to see "Insert image in post" and answer "yes". Click the "preview" button to see that it is the one you want.
If the pic is turned wrong (happens when iPad or iPhone pics are taken vertical or upside down), then when there is an edit line below the enlarged pic to rotate it right-side-up.

And your pics of your kitchen show it off well. Good job with the decor, carpentry, and shelves.

Use the "Preview" button to see what your post looks like before hitting the "Post" button. That will help you know what is happening, or not happening.

Your pics are in your gallery. In fact, several duplicates.

Likely what you are missing, after clicking the "Click here to add Photos to post" a new window pops up, and you are not clicking the menu tab "My gallery" so end up uploading the pic again.
Click the "My gallery" menu tab and your pics will pop up. You can delete the duplicates if you have not already posted them at this time. Then click the one you want to post, it will enlarge. SCROLL down a page or two and you will see the "Insert image in post" (Image and Photo are synonymous) and answer the question "yes". That should do it for you.

Shout out if some part of this doesn't work for you.

Well done. Cute kids in the pics too...

Title: Re: Picture Posting on Forum Help

You clearly are not using the photo uploader if you think jpg will not work.  You must be using the document uploader. Use the BIG BLUE BUTTON that says Click here to add Photos to post.

If I have an album created on my computer that is relevant to the Forum, can I move the entire album to my gallery in one step or do I still have to upload pictures one at a time.
My most recent album was created using the multiple files choice. It was faster than one at a time, but I'm still learning and trying to streamline my process if possible.
Thanks for your help,Mick
Title: Re: Picture Posting on Forum Help

Absolutely not.  The gallery is only used for storing photos used in a post. If it is not in apost, it should not be in your gallery. Then, once it is in a post it must never ever be deleted.

The idea that it is relevant to the forum, is not a reason to upload it. Upload it, put it directly in a post. Easy as that.

If you are using a work computer, it's probably an employer setting to stop uploads and downloads. Being windows 8 should have nothing to do with it. The browser you are using, perhaps.

Scott,

2 ways to do this.  One works if you are using Autodesk Autocad (or at least it used to).  At the command prompt below the model or paper space window type in JPGOUT (that should start a dialog window to let you save your drawing as a raster file).

Or, if you are using some other version of cad without the full Autodesk command set, here is how I have done it in the past.  I hit Shift-PrtScrn while I have Cad open as a full screen with my drawing displayed and then I open an app like MSPaint and hit "paste".  It brings over the Cad screenshot into MSPaint and then lets you save it as a Jpg, bmp, etc.

Like this ...

I "cropped" out the unnecessary stuff so only the drawing was saved.

I just wanted to add that with the new cameras and phones that
have a huge image size it take a lot of space to store. The picture
does not need to be so large to look good unless your zooming in
on it. Reducing the size will help by saving space. This sample
picture from my camera is only 39.1 kb.

If you are using an iPhone or iPad to take pictures that you plan to post on forestry forum, you must hold the device so that the volume buttons are on the bottom edge of said device while taking the picture. If you do not hold the your iPhone or iPad correctly and post directly from iPhone or iPad, your pictures will be oriented wrong on forestry forum and not even Jeff can fix it.

If the orientation of a photo taken with one of Apple's iDevices is corrected, it will then be wrong when viewed on an iPhone or iPad. So please, if you are like me and choose to use iPhones and iPads, please hold device so volume buttons are down when taking pictures. And please don't even think of holding iPhone in portrait orientation when taking pictures, it will never work.

Question about photo sizes.  I took a screen shot on my Mac.  The original size is 1390 x 768 and is 311 kb large.  It's very easy to read on my 22" monitor.

After I uploaded it, it became 639 x 367, and the compression is so bad, it's now 42 kb, it's hard to read the text.

When I hover over the image, it appears clickable, but clicking on it does not do anything.  What would be ideal would be that if I clicked on it, I was taken the full size image I uploaded.  On a small screen (than my 22" monitor), I don't know how people could really even see it.

I can understand the desire (or need) to compress images on upload, but in this case, it's doing more harm to a "harmless" photo than benefiting anyone.

Is the idea that keeping a photo under 640 x 480 (a 1990's concept) is better for the common good?   I feel like I'm in photo jail.   There have been other images on this site I would have liked to see more clearly, but it's impossible due to the compression and scaling.

Even though the snide comments are unappreciated, I'll try to answer your problem.  Cut the image in two. Make two images and your text will be clear. And as for the comments, since you obviously have no understanding why we do things the way we do, I'll let them pass. This time.

Apologies for being snide.  It wasn't against any person, but you took offense personally, and apparently put me on notice.

Thank you for offering the workaround.

Still don't know why you do the things you do.  It is a funds issue?  Is more server space needed?  Bandwidth?

It's been over 3 years since smartphones overtook desktop computers for accessing the Web. What's the biggest screen you can stick in your pocket?

I find other sites annoying sometimes when waiting and waiting and waiting for a bunch of photos of 14MB or more each to load on a page. Half the time they're lousy photos with more background than subject matter, any way.

Crop, scale, compress -- you end up with a photo that conveys what you intend and does so efficiently. Time is precious.

Is there a file size that is recommended for uploading, and what is the easiest way to shrink files. I got a new camera that takes 25 megapixel files and they don't upload, my old camera took 12 megapixel files and they were ok for upload. Just wondering if they must be shrunk, what size is reccomended? :)
Title: Re: Picture Posting on Forum Help

I'd recommend what ever works.  The file size is not the only criteria that limits the upload. It is the length of time it takes as well as the current load additional load it is putting on the server trying to optimize it.  Are you planning on making billboards with that camera??

Thanks Jeff, I know storage costs and didn't know if there were preferred sizes. I dropped my old camera on the concrete floor once to many times and needed a new one for making videos. Decided to try one with a APS-C sensor that makes big files in the auto mode. If I ever figure out how to use it, I should be able to get the size down. I got a message from another member about how to resize with the paint 3d in windows.

Not sure what camera you have, but the image size is usually on one of the first menu screens, and will have several options. If you are only posting the pics online you only need about 2 mpix. The camera will stay in "Auto" mode, just make smaller image files, that are still full screen on your PC. Your memory card will also take 10X longer to fill up.

It is a new Canon entry level Rebel SL2 DSLR. I am starting to use RAW photos for copyright records on my videos and when you download them the software will also make JPEGS to share. I played with the menu you mention and the lowest quality is 3.8 megapixel that should work for the forum if I remember to change it for those pics. I have been pointed to windows 3d paint that will reduce the size easily to any size you need but didn't know the best size for posting.  The 128 gb cards hold lots of photos and video. It is amazing that cell phones now come with 50 megapixel cameras.

First, on the reply page, click on the blue bar where it says "Click here to add photos to post" And if you have already uploaded photos, in the upper right corner of screen, under the words "forestry forum gallery" click on "my gallery" and it will take you to the photos you've already uploaded. Hope this helps.

I don't see My Gallery either.
I sent the moderator a report.
Really the best way. It's at the bottom of each post. That way they can get it quicker. May not see this post for hours. But than he might of seen it when you posted.

What do you mean by you don't see your gallery Ray? I went to your profile and clicked on my gallery and there it was.  I've had a couple complaints on a permission error. Without knowing the exact error, and browser you are using, I have no way of trying to figure out the problem, especially when it seems to be working for everyone else.

I can look at my gallery but I see no place to add/upload new photos.

I tried to add a current photo to a post as a test and recieved "Error
You don't have permission to perform this operation.
" ..

I may have found the issue, not sure, but give it a shot. Please dump all of your cookies and internet temp files and try again if you are having issues with uploading. I found a cookie setting that may have been causing the issue that was changed when the forum software was upgraded after the server move.  I'm hoping that is/was the problem

Let me try to explain better.I seem to remember when I would click on the FF Gallery, just above the sponsors on the left, there was a button for My Gallery. Now there's Home,Log In,Album List, Search. Maybe that was always there, but I seem to remember My Gallery.

That means, that you are not logged into the gallery  Did you try to delete ALL cookies?  Log out of the forum, delete all cookies. then log back in.

I have permission issues, not letting me post a picture in a post, I can get to my gallery only from my profile.  I can add a picture to my gallery though.

Jim, I see you uploaded a photo this morning.

If I have different people with different problems just saying it doesn't work, I have no way of knowing what "It" is.  I'm trying to figure this out, but not being able to replicate the problem here, and not getting exact info on the problem there, it's problematic.

Log out of the forum, then log back in an try that.

Jim Rogers. you just uploaded the same picture 4 times.

When deleting cookies, especially with firefox, you have to choose how far back to delete. If your default is set at an hour, or a day, you probably are not doing anything.

I do think I found the issue, but it does no good unless you.

1. Logout of the forum!!
2. Delete all cookies related to forestryforum.com OR www.forestryforum.com
3. Log back into forum.

I just found that I did upload it four times. The problem as I see it is the after you upload screen that come up says you don't have permission.
I went to my gallery and found it four times and tried to delete three of them and I can't seem to do that, but I'll keep trying.
I'm trying to help you to identify the problem if I can.

I still can see or find the delete button to remove my three extra pictures. I don't know if you have removed that or not.
I went to the first picture and while I was in modify my post mode on the "what are you sawing" thread, I selected "insert picture in post" and it worked.

I have not changed anything to do with buttons.  If you don't see all the buttons, it means you are not logged into the gallery.

I found the issue where the insert picture with a click function would not work.   The problem is the way the new software handles cookies.  It used to be www.forestryforum.com and forestryforum.com were no different from each other in relation to the way the cookies function. Now, they are distinctively different and if you reference the www.forestryforum.com anywhere related to just forestryforum.com, the cookies do not talk. The gallery was referencing with a www and the forum was not. Many people logged in the first day we changed servers and those first cookies were now expiring related to the gallery, about at the same time, explaining why several people started having an issue about the same time.

I was just able to add a photo to this post with a click after removing the www references form the gallery config files.

Ok, well I'm not sure how the gallery window got refreshed but when I went back to it the delete button was there, and I deleted the extra three photos, that I accidentally uploaded. And I went to my last "sawing" post and verified that my picture was still there, and it was.

I am glad you have worked it all out.
Thanks for everything you do for us.

When I log into the forum and click the Forestry Forum Gallery link my choices are Home/Login/Album List/Search. I can't see my galleries. Any ideas? I tried Chrome and Firefox (cleared browsing data and caches in both). Thanks

You could not have completely cleared your data then. You never mentioned cookies.

can you see it if you go to your profile and click on my gallery?

Anyone coming to the forum via a bookmark, needs to delete the bookmark.  Come to http://forestryforum.com     Anything with a www creates an issue with the gallery or the forum.

I've added an entry to our .htaccess file to try and force the forestryforum.com address.  Hopefully that will weed out the issues of people not seeing that they need to make some changes and making them for them.
