Wild grain pattern in oak

I have it on good authority that this is red oak, curious if anyone knows what would cause this. (Posted in "Whatcha Sawwin" thread as well).

Sure is pretty whatever the cause.  It's many years old from when it was cut down, perhaps that is it?  Lumber looks high dollar ;D

I've seen something similar to that in what I think was black oak although it wasn't nearly so abundant. The wood went completely south while drying. Hopefully that won't be your experience.

Bought some mahogany once with a similar pattern. The supplier called it "plum pudding mahogany".

Looks like a highly marbled corned beef brisket freshly sliced!
