Title: tapio harvester head
Post by: caper587 on February 18, 2008, 08:33:35 PM
Hi all, I operate a harvester with a tapio 400 head. They are a stroke delimber. Were having alot of trouble with the cyl. that strokes the top knives, welds cracking. The dealer tells us that were the only ones having this prob., and there not very helpful with other contractor's names. No one else in the area is running this head. There is a little over 2000 hrs. on it but we've been having problems since there were less than 1000. Does anyone else have experiance with this head?

No experience with that brand of head.

But regardless, you need to find a good welder and reinforce those welds or start over by grinding out all the old weld. A good weld will be stronger than the rest of the knife. You should be able to break new metal before the weld breaks.

No experience here either with that brand. Ditto! to what Gary C. said on the need to involve a good welder if it is a problem with the welds breaking.

YEP,ONCE A WELD BREAKS YOU NEED to clean it all out and start over.do you have a pic of this head and the parts that are breaking?? maybe,we can help you fix the problem.

try heating the knife first before you start welding it will show you the full length of the cracks, also you should use high tensile welding rods

Is it the cylinder or the knife that is cracking? If its the cylinder, is it the rod or the tube part?
If its the knife, welded knives were a problem for some heads. I know Logmax would use cast knives as they would last longer. Welding creates a weak spot around the weld, but the weld itself should not break if properly done.

Folks, do you think caper587 is serious?
He was last active 3 hours after he registered and has not even read Gary_C's post, unless as a guest!

As an ex-forest machine mechanic and having worked on Tapio heads, I may be able to give the needed insight into it's repair.   :P

So caper587, if you show yourself, I will readily disclose what information you need.   Until then........                (If others need Tapio advice, shout up)
