Here is the world's largest earthquake shake test captured on a youtube video, and there are a few others listed on the link below. Built of oriented strand board from Vancouver based Ainsworth Lumber in Kobe, Japan.

Quite a few modern buildings have a skeleton of steel but infilled with wood. Currently in most of Canada, a wood frames building can only be 3 stories, but recently in BC they have made amendments to the code to allow 6 stories. Some buildings have been constructed with the first two floors of concrete, followed by 6 floors wood. In Britain there is a 9 story building, which was constructed in 2008. The world's tallest wooden structure.

The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, Richmond Olympic Oval. Construction includes 1.6 meter wide wooden glulam beams that are 330 feet long. It's unique Wood Wave roof used over one million board feet of pine beetle damaged wood.

North America's largest wooden building.

Saint Mary's parish church (église Sainte-Marie), unquestionably North America's largest wooden building, was constructed to handle the burgeoning number of devout Roman Catholic parishioners in 1905. Its pastor at the time, Father Pierre-Marie Dagnaud, C.J.M. (1902-1908), entrusted the building of the church to a local architect, the self- taught master carpenter Léo Melanson, with able assistance from many parishioners. St. Mary's Church was blessed at a sumptuous dedication ceremony by the Apostolic Delegate to Canada, His Excellency Monsignor Sbarretti, in 1905.

With its striking beauty and magnitude, St. Mary's Church attracts thousands of tourists annually (approximately 28,000 in 1997), who photograph and admire it from every conceivable angle. Among treasures and furnishings of note to visitors are a precious reliquary, exquisitely crafted by an Acadian artist from the region, and a fine collection of religious and liturgical artifacts exhibited in the museum room (established in 1970). This museum inside the church is open to the public throughout the summer.

The lofty church spire reaches a height of 56.36 meters (185 feet), with its cross adding another 1.67 meters (5.6 feet); the nave measures 57.89 meters (190 feet), and the transepts are 41.13 meters (135 feet) in length. The surface area of the church covers 2,207.3 square meters (23,780 square feet). Three bronze bells in the steeple weigh 1,694.22 kilograms (3,740 pounds), and the towering structure is stabilized at its base by 36.24 metric tons (40 English) of stone ballast.

The first time you walk into the superior (yooper) dome, I hope itsa not for a sporting event, because if it is, you will mi

360 degree virtual tour of the yooper dome. I did it via a cell phone connection, so dial up should do it too.

I was working through the carpenters union when the dome was built, got called out to work on it, when I got there I was told I would be working with the crew placing  the purlings  between the main gluelams. I took one look at the two tree length dug furs lashed together with chain holding up the main beams and though it best to go back and finish the garage I was working on :o :o
several years later the HVAC service guy (a friend of mine) asked me if I would like to go to the top with him and check out the view, you can see the catwalk when you look up it is suspended by allthread, well I don't what was shaking more me or the catwalk, made it half way and turned back figured I didn't need a free lunch that bad smiley_sweat_drop
If it can't be nailed or glued then screw it

An interesting aespect of these large projects is constructability.

Years ago I designed an 85' span tapered, pitched glulam that was 16" wide and over 8' deep in the middle of the span in a 80psf snow load location.  It was for a gym which used several of them with gerts in between for the panelized roof system.  The consideration for maximum span was transportation of the beams.  The railroad was close by and that was the max length for that section of rail (mountainous) with the cars they had.  Highway Patrol escort allowed the trucking from the train to the site.

The really long spans (300') must have been laminated on site?  Interesting.

I wouldn't even start up there. Just looking up at the catwalk would make me dizzy with my feet firmly planted on concrete floor.  ;D :D :D

Here is one in South America and it is built below sea level as is the entire city of Georgetown also protected by dikes.  Of course the area was founded/ setteled  by the Dutch.

While in Japan last spring, my fiancée and I went to see this temple... check out the size of the people on the steps:

It's the largest wooden structure in the world... the Great Buddha Hall at Todai-Ji, a Buddhist temple in Nara, Japan. Records show that 2,600,000 people worked on the construction of the temple. The Great Buddha Hall was completed in 752, with the original building being 30% bigger than this one. The hall has burned down twice, and the building that's there now was built in 1709, at 2/3 the size of the original. Inside, there's a bronze statue of a sitting Buddha that's 50 feet tall and weighs 550 tons. For more info:

I'm sure if you had a big screen in a room and up close you would go dizzy and your stomach pressing hard on your food pipe. If you ever went in that 360 ° pavilion in Disney world with the flight simulator you know what I mean. You sway with the video and nothing is even moving. Good thing there is a railing to hang on to. :D
