I think it was made in Prentice Wi.
Here is the present company

I think they might have changed names a few years ago.

Its not an "apprentice" loader it is a "Prentice". Made in Prentice Wisconsin.
After the founder sold the compnay they started the new compnay making splitters, processors and other related equipment.  Some of it was painted green.
They are good people and I'm sure they will be happy to provide info to you about the machine you refer to.

Didn't lafont go out of business a long time ago? I remember ads for them back in the 80's .

Hello Chris,

I hate to disappoint you, but there is little information about the La Font firewood processors and/or splitters.  Is it a normal wood splitter, or a firewood processor?  La Font made both in the late 70's early 80's.

In the early 80's the business name changed from La Font to Prentek, and then again to Multitek which it is still called today.  We are still in Prentice, WI as well.

The firewood processor was invented by Leo Heikkinen who also invented the Prentice Loader.  La Font was started in the mid to late 70's.

That is a link to an old story about La Font in 1979.  Today the firewood processors are manufactured here in Prentice in a variety of shapes and sizes, but are all based on the original concepts of the La Font firewood processor.

I hope this helps, I'm sorry I don't have much more information on the equipment.

Best regards,

This is very interesting information I enjoy the history behind it. I bought a lafont ss500 a little over a year ago and used it until the motor went out on it. Very well designed and heavy duty splitter for sure. I'm in the process of buying another ss500 because I like them so much and plan on modifying it to have a log lift and hydraulic wedge with table grate for re splits. I also have the original manual for it which is a very rare thing to have! could you kindly send me the article on them if you still have it?

Well picking up the splitter tomorrow looking forward to turning it into a really sweet splitter and making lots of firewood with it and having a piece of history.
