been a member here since 2010 ,like reading all the post here great info.
This is my first post , so bear with me, i'm in the process of adding a new husky , to my older 254xp , I bought it new july 1993 and have had nothing but good luck with it , still runs great and is still very strong.
cut around 15- 20 cords of fire wood a year for my father and I , mostly birch and maple and some spruce. some saw logs , balsom fir.
my 254xp with 15 inch bar and chain full of gas and oil weights in right at 16 lbs. she isn't any heavier than when I got her , but she sure feels like it. been interested in the new 550xp at 10.8 lbs bare weight or maybe the 562xp? how do you think those saws compare to the 254xp? 16 inch bar is big enough , most of the wood I cut is 6 -12 inches , and some real limby , how much power will I loss from going from 254xp to the 550xp?

My 562 is heavier but has quite abit more power than my 254xp. Probably the 550 would be the best choice if you want a lighter saw I have never used one but I've looked them over at the dealers they look like a nice saw

Once you get used to the 550, it will be hands down a joy versus your 254.  The handling and the ergonomics are what you will notice most.

The new AV is way better now aswell I have gotten so I don't even wanna run my 2 series saws anymore for that reason

A 550 will kick a 254s butt its lighter better ergos and faster IMO !!Id take a 550xp  over my 2 346xps if I had the $$$  8) 8)

There is NO way a 550 is going to kick a 254's behind in the power department.     Like a good 346, it will be right on the heels of a 254, but just won't be able to catch it.

But on all other points, the guys are correct. Lighter and WAY smoother. Handles like a scapel. Even with slightly less power, you'll prefer running the 550 over the 254. With a 16" bar, this is definitely the way you should go, and the bars and chains will swap between the 2 saws.

newfie bullet,  I owned a 254xp for 10 years great saw! Last fall I picked up a 562xp and I can't say enough about the saw. great power and balanced extremely well.

Maybe the 254 I ran was poorly tuned idk but it sure didn't impress me compared to the 550 my buddy has!!!!! Both stock BTW

Spike60

Yeah, could have been poorly tuned; could have been the chain. Maybe that 254 was just getting tired. Thing is, if that's the only 254 you've run, then your opinion is based on just that one saw. Shouldn't really conclude that all 254's run like that one. But it's very common on these sites for guys to do that, so I'm not picking on you specifically.  :)   Really need to have some experience with several examples of any saw to get a good feel of what they are capable of.

I am also looking at the 550XP. I ran the 254xp for 12 years, but I used a 346XP yesterday and I was just amazed! I also like the Jonsered 2258, but there are no dealers in my area

The Husky 555 (not an xp) is the same saw as the 2258, internally.
