Paw paw seeds

Swamper,if I want to try to raise some paws from the seeds what would be the best way to handle them.??Frank C.

Put them in a bag of sand and freeze for a few months, then plant in good moist cove site.  Just my guess. Or have them pass through a raccoon.

Thanks Woodtroll,would that be moist or dry sand.Could they be put in a jar of sand and just left out on the back porch or would it be better in the freezer??Frank C.

I would use moist, and the freezer. A little more control. Just enough to weaken the seed coat.

Linnea's tried and true method for growing paw paws:
Place seed in pot with potting soil - I think she uses metromix 360
Water
Place in refridgerator for 3 months - not necessary to freeze
After three months place pot in a sunny window
Water.  Do not let it dry out

I picked up some seeds off the ground this spring while mushroom hunting from a big paw paw that must have had tons of fruit last fall.  I put them in potting soil and now have 25-30 seedlings to plant on a north facing slope in my oak timber.  I started with about 75 seeds and well over half germinated, but some did not last long.
