Not a forum question, but here goes anyways.

Windows 2000

My file manager will close itself after being open for 1-15 minutes.  Anyone heard of this problem, or know a fix for it?  It's driving me insane!

Thanks,

David

Isn't File Manager an old utility left over from Windows 3.11.
You should be able to do everything with Explorer.
What are you using it for?

moving, deleting files.  I think it's file manager.  I click [windows button] E to open it.

If you right click on the Start Button and chose Explore do you get the same program?

Yes, that's the one.  Took me a while to find it that way.

Try looking in the control panel.
Go to Start   -   Settings   -   Control Panel
Then open Administrative Tools
Then open the event Viewer

You may find something being logged here

Event Viewer didn't catch anything when it closed itself.

That's strange. The first Question I ask when something strange happens is when did you last restart?
Any other program aborting?
Have you been to the Microsoft update site to make sure your system is up to date?

I update the os a couple of months ago.  This problem is at least 6 months old.  I can use Explorer, but I'd prefer to use File Manager.

No other programs do this, but my computer does crash about once a month.

I don't think File Manager has been updated to run on Win2. The next step would be to try to find someone else using it in this environment to see if they have the same problem.
In the mean time let us know what you can't do with explorer and maybe we can help you

This keystroke brings up Windows Explorer. not File Manager. File Manager was lost when converting from WIN 3.1 to WIN 95.

Have you tried running an up to date virus scan? How long has it been since you ran Scan Disk or Defraged the hard drive?

From the Microsoft Knowledge base...

CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 does not support File Manager or Program Manager.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, either upgrade to a Microsoft Office product version later than 4.3, or edit the properties of the icon on the taskbar to point to Explorer.exe instead of Winfile.exe. You can find Explorer.exe in the %SystemRoot% of the computer.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
