Seeing as how we have WAAAYYYYYY more Red Cedar than we can sell, (Odds and ends), we are thinking of starting to build Turkey Calls, at night, in the camper. We can cut the parts at home and carry them to the camp for assembly.

We might be interested in small scrap pieces of Walnut, Cherry, Osage and Quarter sawn Sycamore.

Anyone here do Turkey Calls. Got any input for us ???

Walnut?  I have been chopping up walnut boards for the last two days to get the clear boards.  Been throwing the scraps into the FEL on the tractor.  They're all KD S2S to 13/16" but really small.  Let me know the minium size you need and I'll fish them out of the loader in the morning and send them off to ya for the price of a stamp. :)

I just cut down 3 walnut trees at Thanksgiving time.  We cut up a bunch of the limbs for firewood and since it has been too wet here in W TN to get on the lawn, the stuff hasn't been brought home yet.  If Larry doesn't have large enough pieces, I am sure I can send you some bigger ones.  Be glad too do it for the UPS costs.

Thanks, Teach.  You see the measurements. A few pieces of each would be good for a start. I can always ask for more, later. ;D ;D

By the way, we have a crown root that is triangle shaped. I can cut chunks from it to trade, if anyone wants to try turning bowls with it. I believe Sawwood was interested.

It is anywhere from 6"-12" thick, and it will make probably, 10 chunks about 12" square. Give me sizes y'all would be interested in. Same deal. Pay shipping.  ;D

hey Harold, you ever come across something called a cypress knee?  I've seen some pretty neat carvings made out of them in books and wouldn't mind giving one a try.  I'll need an address for the wood and should have it coming your way monday.

Gonna up the anty??  How about a few Hickory or other hardwood for strikers. Need to make 5/16" dowels, 7" long. A few pieces would be all that's needed.  Thanks

I think I have some Hickory in the basement of the shop. If so I'll throw it in with the other wood.

Yep I have. My last venture though failed. I had some Curly hard maple to try for the box and it was to hard for me to machine. The ones I make have a hardwood box with and attached resonator board. I use shumack for the striker.

Simple Turkey Call.

Finished stock is 1 5/16  square and 4 5/16 inches long. Mark center on end and drill a 7/8s hole 3 3/8s inches deep.  You then slab the side off making the square stock 1" thick exposing one edge of your hole. You then tack on a sounding plate of a resinous wood. The one pictured is using redwood. its around 3/16s thick and 4 1/2" by 1 1/2".  Use a piece of chalk as a striker or a chunk of chalked hardwood.

Jeff,

It sounds good to me. You should have taken some to Michigan's National Wild Turkey Federation Convention in Lansing this week-end. Built locally!!
