Title: Pole barn doors
Post by: John_Haylow on August 21, 2013, 04:10:00 PM
I would like to build some sliding doors for a pole barn with a 24'wide opening and 12' in height. I was thinking of using a double track so I could have better access using 3 - 8' doors. Anyone have any thoughts on this, I have heard that the cannonball style track system is better.
Thanks,
John

make 2 12' doors with a single overhead track. my old kiln doors i made 16' wide x12' high with no real issues.

It is going to depend some on how wide that end of the building is or if the terrain allows you to take the track off the building to a support pole.

i don't think the building is  sitting on a peak, if there was any excavating done there will be plenty of ground clearance to run the track of the ends of the building. :)

On my previous post I should have added how much of the 24 ft you need open at once.

I think about every set of doors roll one way or another depending on need.   The doors on the north gable end will bypass each other.  They can both go out some 4 feet past the end wall each way so we can make about a 16' opening on either side.

The ones on the front will bypass but only go to the left because of the wall that comes out on the right.

The doors over the deck are on single track and only move to left or right because they are cut out to fit over the deck.

I think something like you have on your gable end would work for me Bibby. I take it you have a double track there, do you have the square track or the round track. Also how many support hangers do you have on each door?

Thanks,
John

I've always built my sliding barn doors with sheets of plywood or t-111 as the core and ran 2x or 1x material around the perimeter. Sometimes I will put bats on the plywood to cover seams and make it look board and batten but without the work or the weight.
