Maple questions

I have a silver maple in my yard that has burl looking things on many of the branches.  There are alot.  What's that about?


And I have two big sugar maples on either side of my driveway.  Big sons a guns.  On one side of one of them, the bark is so black it looks burnt.  It lasts about the length of a long butt log  Whats that about?
