Lost a Stihl 026, MS290, MS660, Husky XP1100 and a Lewis chainsaw winch to thieves that flew in by floatplane to our remote fishcamp while we weren't there.  They also stole an heirloom Remington rifle.  After the initial shock and outrage, I checked with my household insurance agent, not knowing if I had any coverage for the saws etc.  Turns out I was covered and the Insurance Co. Since it was my first claim they said they would waive the $2500 deductible!  Had them repeat that a couple of times! They were willing to replace them with new equivalent models.  As I am 70+ years old, I don't imagine I'll ever have to buy another chainsaw.  I now have a new MS261CM an MS291 a MS661CM  a MS461and a new Lewis winch.  I tried to hold out till the new 462 was out in Canada, but no news yet.  I went for the 461 to do some milling with an Alaskan mill and to power the Lewis winch.
My Insurance Co ( Intact ) was totally helpful and co-operative!  It's the way claims like this should go!  After all it's pretty traumatic for a guy like me to lose chainsaws and rifles!
Honest this is not a testimonial for the Insurance Co.!

WOW, glad to hear you didn't get a lot of hassle, but still sad to hear you got hit so bad, or I should say at all.
What is a husky 1100, or is that a typo and should be a 2100?

A few years ago some guys boated down the Yukon and on the way back hit every unoccupied cabin, an old trapper returned to his and got on their trail, catching up to them while they were sleeping over in Yukon Territory, he motored on past then drifted back and surprised them, took their boat and all including CLOTHES, left them out in the bush naked. lol

It turned out they were a couple of soldiers and had stolen a pickup, boat and trailer and put in at circle, I do not know what they were thinking they were going to do, with all them stolen guns and gear in Canada.

No it really was an 1100.  Not too sure what the vintage was, but it did not have a chain brake. It was a beast of a saw!  It had great torque for the winch!  At my advancing age the 461 is a better weight saw for me.
For a long time after the theft I laid awake at night dreaming of what I would like to do if I could get a trail cam picture of the floatplane registration!  As a former floatplane pilot I find this theft particularly despicable!
I'm sure they'll be back when they think I've replaced stuff!

Ok I think I know the saw you are talking about and they were a beast, I doubt I could ever even start one these days.

That is a purty line up you have now, and I hope they don't come back, I hate a thief in the worst way.
Exceptionally nice of your insurance agent to wave your deductable.
I had a similar story a few years ago, I had a trailer tire come out of the sky north of Edmonton, it had to have come from a truck running the other direction, but I didn't know who, all I carry is liability, so figured it was on me, but called my insurance anyway and told them the story. They told me no problem, see if I could patch it up enough to bring it home, they would rather fix it in New Mexico. I stuck some headlights on the passenger side off an old chevy pickup after I got to anchorage and headed back south, but needed to make another trip before heading home. When I finally got home and called the insurance company, was the first time I had looked at the report the mountie had written up, all it said was I hit an object, no mention of the tire. For all the insurance knew I could have hit a tree, over 10,000 damage and they paid off under my uninsured motorist insurance, no problem.

Sometimes it's better to shop insurance on reputation rather just just cost.  Chances are the cheapest companies are the ones what will try and weasel out of paying a claim, or paying less. They know a new sucker will be along to sign up if if you get pithed off and drop them because they wont pay your claim.

I've been with the same insurance co since I left home in (1981?). Only a couple of claims in that time, and they came though. When I broke up with the ex she kept the farm policy we had. 12 months later the old farmhouse burnt down. No problem getting a brand new house with the same floor area built. Probably increased the property value by $200K, but the policy said "replacement" with a new house, and that's what they did.

My insurer is still run as a "co-operative", owned by the policy holders, and specialising in rural insurance. But they will write regular house / contents / vehicle / business policies as well. But as most of their marketing is to rural, they seem to attract the lower "fraud risk" customers, and they can be a little more picky about who they sign up.

Not to derail your topic, but seems appropriate here:

Would like some recommendations/information on insurers that are good to work with on forestry and sawing operations. Coverage for mill, related equipment and also inventory of lumber, logs, etc.

THanks!

Nice lineup gcgrant,
In my 20 years running my tree service I only had to use my insurance once, that was a few years ago involving a parked car.
First claim and no deductible fee. They told me I'm allowed free deductible once every 4 years. And my premium didn't go up. :D

Here's a little history on your old Husqvarna 1100CD.
Introduced in 1973 and replaced by the upgraded 2100CD in late 1976.

Making a living with a saw since age 16.

Thanks for the info.  I bought it 20yrs ago for $50, he was using it for spacing.  After I tightened up bolts on the cylinder it ran really well.  Enough torque to bust woodruff keys in the Lewis winch!  Really drug some good sized logs with it

starmac

I don't believe I have ever seen a saw that big on a Lewis, I bet it would bust the keys, and probably a good thing they were there to break.

a dream come true!!  why didn't you go with the 362 instead of the 291? then you would a have all professional saws!

My dream team would be MS261CM, MS362CM, MS462CM, MS661CM

instead i have: 260, 361, 361, 066, not bad also, the 462 is on the list once it gets released in america. have my dealer get a quote to bring one from europe just for me. i have to have this saw. the same weight as the 361 but 1.4hp more

Yep Teakwood I know what you mean about the 362 over the 291. The saw was supposed to be of like kind and value. The saw it replaces was a 290, a saw I never really cared for.  But it's the one at my fishcamp I was willing to let less than pros run.  I have to say this new 291 seems to be a nice upgrade.  Weight and feel very similar to the 261.  Haven't even cut any wood with it yet.
I also haven't used my 461 yet, have kind of a deal with my dealer that if we get the 462 in Canada this year, I could turn the 461 in on a 462.

Really good ending to a bad experience, thieves must not have a conscience. I've often thought I'd like a lewis winch but have never seen one in use, I think my old 041 would make a good powerhead for one.

041 should work ok with the winch, I tried it with my 034 and it didn't have enough for what I was doing. Of course doubling up the line with a block makes a big difference.
