I am shopping around for a used skidder.  I noticed some good prices on a few 450 Timberjacks.  Does this machine have any inherent problems that anyone is aware of?  I seem to be able to get a good looking 450 for less money than a 230 or Clark Ranger.  Seems odd?

What year? I just bought a 380c my one buddy has one and his buddy has a 450c. There good machines. The 200 series is out of this world price wise. Everyone wants those.the 380s and 450s are a lot bigger than the 200s. The 450 is longer.bigger axles than the 380. Most times they have much bigger rubber.

That was my thought as well. Bigger rubber, more fuel, need more room in the woods. A friend of mine has a 450, said it will suck up a lot of fuel. I think he said 80 gallons a day, but that may have been the forwarder running too.

There is no way that a 450 skidder could suck up that much fuel, even the older Tigercat 845 harvesters from the late 90's early 2000's would have had a hard time burning that much.

Dave Shepard

It must have been both the skidder and the forwarder then. I can ask the next time I see him. I just remember it was a lot of fuel.

no possible way it burns that much fuel if I work my 640d all day move like 70 trees skidding 3000 feet the most I would burn is about 130 letres

had a couple 450's , I sure would take a good one over what I'm running right now which is a 230 , If you push the 450 real hard in big timber I know I could not make it to 5 oclock on a tank of fuel but in most cases about 25 gallons a day would be a normal , I burn that in the 230 a day

ehp

is it a 3 speed or a 4 speed trans in it , I have had both

Kemper

I have a 460d grapple and I can run it from sunrise to sunset and not burn that much fuel.  Cost per ton I come out a head with big skidders. Need a good driver who can get big and heavy drags to make it pay off though.

We own a 450c DA grapple and it does not burn a lot of fuel. I have not figured out how much a day yet but I run it all day, pull decent size hitches up  steep hill and I cant complain about its fuel consumption. But I also don't hold it to the boards while running the grapple, I like our equipment to last. Its got the 6cyl Cummins, recently rebuilt. I love the machine, runs 28l x 26 tires with bear paws on all 4. Has a 123" cat grapple on it from a 535, grapple is a little over kill for the machine but it'll pull a big hitch. Stable as all hell. Only had to use the locker once on it. Machine grips good, have no complaints as of yet, been running it for almost 2 months now. Still new to me but I love it! Dual arch is nice cause you have more reach and you can bring your hitch up onto the machine putting the weight more over your axle then off the back of the machine. It was definitely a smart investment for us! Good luck with your new purchase no matter what it might be!

Like I said, I wasn't entirely sure about the number, so let's not get too wound up about it.  ;) :) It is a grapple machine with a 6BT. Forwarder has a 4BT. I think it's a 610 TJ.

Yes mine is a 6bt. My buddies 460 was a single action grapple 6bt and it was BAD on fuel. Maybe operator maybe pump setting maybe both.it was electronic.maybe that too?

all our motors are opened up on the pumps as we end up doing long skids with big hitchs as road cost is just way to high so we just pulled farther , Not all the time but I have seen mile skids lots of times and that burns fuel

ga jones

Kemper a 460 d is a deere engine and trans isn't it?

That's a good motor I have one sitting in my barn id like to do something with someday! Ehp I have the same road problem as you seems like half the wood u cut is close to a half mile yard last year I cut a lot idk how far the yard was but it took 2 to 2.5 hours per twitch to drive in cut and drive back out and I ran 3rd or 4th gear on the 540 and burnt a lot of fuel doing it

Yes, it's the same as a 648. Even has JD floor mats.

Ok, thanks for the info on fuel consumption. It is a 1981. I am not sure on the engine yet but thinking a 453?

Detroits are really good on fuel. Noisy( unless its a 453t )there almost as quiet as a cummins. Simple to work on cheap to rebuild.
