I'm new to milling but I have never seen a piece of maple with this coloring. Anyone ever see this? It was a cool looking piece before I cut it because it took a 90 degree turn. It also had a hole in it with a little rot. There is a before and after pic.  As usual the pics don't do it justice.

Also this was a left over from a select cut I had done last summer. Glad I saved it from rotting into the ground.

Are you sure that is maple? Looks like poplar to me.

No I'm not sure lol . This is why I ask you guys. To be honest maybe I mistaken the bark as a maple.

Kind of embarrassing but after looking up different shades of poplar, I do believe it is. Thank you for the help.

Is this rare? I never have seen the purple.

That coloring is pretty common in poplar

Ranibow poplar or mineral poplar, my guess is it grew in pretty wet soil?

Looks like Poplar to me.   Usually has totally green heartwood unless it picks up mineral. The mineral causes  the purple heartwood.

Thanks guys. Yea it's relatively wet soil and the sat on top of an old coal mine. The mine constantly has water coming from where it once was. All this makes sense.

I know there are a lot of different types of maple but I have a bunch that look a lot like the bark was on that tree. Although I don't have a seasoned eye yet. I am self taught and have a lot more teaching and learning to do. Haha

Overall still a cool slab I am happy with it. Thanks a bunch guys
