Title: Peterson Demo Day ...With A Real Peterson Guy
Post by: Burlkraft on April 09, 2007, 09:37:40 PM
Saturday, April 28th 2007 in Beeutiful Madison Wisconsin we're elevating the sawing of the now famous Wisconsin Redwood Log to a full blown Peterson Demo Day. Chris Brown from Peterson is gonna make the 18+ hour trip to be there to demo my mill and answer all yer questions. I even hear there's gonna be a contingent from the Michigan area in attendance... 8)  8)  8)

There's 4500 bf or so of lumber there that we're gonna really need some help with, so if you were lookin' at buyin' sumpthin and haven't decided this would be yer time. Or if ya ain't got nuthin to do..well now ya do.  If ya can't make it down to Sawlex...come on down....This is just hot off the presses so we don't have all the details worked out yet, but we'll get right at it and let ya know... ;D ;D ;D

Yep, Corley5 and I are making the trip to help saw up the beast. Burlkraft and Eggiman are supplying us with a couple new king size pigroast tables for this year, and we'll take one of them to Sawlex so ya'll can see what they look like if you attend.  Its pretty cool that we give a call to Peterson's and we not only get their support for the event, we get Chris too!

This will be a great time to come up and see something many of us will never get a chance to see in this part of the country. A Peterson Swing mill disassembling a big Redwood Log!  I can't wait!

We have to get times narrowed down, but the event will definitely be on Saturday, April 28th. I'm looking foward to getting one of them old time photos with all of us sitting on the log. :D  I'm also looking forward to taking my turn on doing some sawing.

Whaddaya think Steve, How wide a slab can we make?  8)

He still might, but he says that they are backed up from the cold and will probably bust loose when it gets warm.

Were bringing my tandem trailer with a 16 foot bed.

We will be going around the Top. Tammy is dropping me and the trailer off at Greg's Thursday morning in Wolverine. Once in Wolverine, ya gotta go over da top.  :)   We will probably leave for home on Sunday morning.

Here's the address for where the cutting is to take place.

4430 Helgesen Dr.
Madison, Wi.

According to Burlkraft "It's just 4 miles off the interstate so Map quest should get everybody there no problemo....."  :)

Might just make the trip up from Peoria. Any idea on costs you will be asking for the wood? I have to get out to Peoria's Detwiller Park tomorrow and get a picture of our Peoria redwood. I bet it's the sister to this one. Story has it that Caterpillar brought a log in for photo work. It even has the same type of bark retention system ;D I'll post the pics when I get them. I thought that WI log was ours when I first saw the photo without reading.

low_48, that there log in Peoria ia already famous on the forestry forum. There are quite a few references to it and some picture too. Some forum members are rumored to have carved names in it. One is rumored to have carved MY name into it. :D (not by me)

You guys have it all wrong.  They ain't gonna saw no boards from that log.  They are going to demonstrate the new Peter-lathe-erson attatchment for oversized turning stock.  Burlkraft is going to chuck that bigboy up and turn a lamp out of it.

Ahh, if he was picking you, Jeff up it was kinda a toss up which way was shorter.

5 hours 13 minutes for me.  About 4 1/2 hours if I take the cycle and avoid the radar.  Taking the ferry from Muskegon to Milwaukee would be shorter, but about $80, and surely not as much fun.  If it would ever quit snowing!

Have to check with the Domestic Goddess to clear the way....

John, ya need to add at least an hour to that time if ya are going down and around, maybe more. That time is only good if you head through in the dead of night, trust me on this. ;)

Any chance the slabber could be updated to take my 72" bar ??? ;D

Any camping nearby?  Definetly not taking the cycle.  We bought a camper last year and have had it out once so far.  I've been given the "that sounds like fun" go ahead to look into coming over and camping out.  I have a feeling the heater will be getting a thorough workout!

Will be coming round the bottom from Mid W MI.  We have a spare seat, and room in the truck bed for gear, is someone wants to ride along and camp out there.  Your on your own once we get there.  I sing in the car too, but that shouldnt stop ya!

There's camping around...If you search the Wi. DNR site there should be a list of parks. I know there is one around the village of McFarland....Not too far from the site. The site is on the east side of Madison, near the Interstate...if that helps  ::) ::) ::)

I'm not much of a camper.....

Burlkraft

When you block the mill up make sure that you can slide it side to side a bit on the cribbing.  With as wide as that thing is I don't think your going to be able to make the right side cut without moving it a bit.
Just a thought, I think I thunk of. :)

Ya oughta see da ones I can't show...... ;D
Here are a few more.

Motion shot cutting the last steel band, and the bark dropping away fast......critters a runnin away.......

Here I thought we's gonna saw her up with the Peterson, but he's attacking it with da big Stihl....makin short work of the 6" thick bark.

Perched up on treated supports, the crane will lift her off and set 'er down on timbers in the parking lot. Some solid wood it appears under there, as only the sapwood is punky. Some burl knots hangin off it, solid as the day they was born.

T'other side with bark off......gonna make some fine slabs, I do believe.  Standing aside this thing makes one feel pretty small. Gonna need some ladders ta get everyone on top for a good picture.

Found a furball of a "whatzit" that must be hibernating, as it wasn't movin a muscle, and in a deep sleep.  Whatzit?

Instead of hiring a crane, you could just get your guns out and shoot the supports out from under that log. I think Beenthere knows how to do that. Also isn't there someone thats coming that has a bunch of shells leftover that had bear written on them?    ;D

Just a suggestion.    :D :D

Just got back from setting the log in the parking lot.

Yes...I forgot the camera, but it was just me and the crane operator so there really wasn't time for me to take any pictures....Mike kept me pretty busy.... ;) ;) ;)

They sent a 70 ton crane and it took a lot longer to set up and take down than it did to lift. There are 2 big checks one in each end and naturally they were running the wrong way... ::) ::) The 20' straps were too short to choke the log and rotate it so we had to block it and roll it. We went slow and made small rolls...3 of them but we got the checks horizontal now and she's all ready to be milled.... ;D ;D ;D

The crane drew a pretty big crowd from the neighborhood so I can't imagine what the saw demo will draw... ;D ;D

Oh yeah the log scaled 18, 680 lbs hangin' on the crane. The guy who gave me the log told me 10,000 and the volume calculator said 22,000..... ;) ;) ;)

Them supports that thing was sittin' on kinda disintegrated when the log was lifted off o' them. It prolly wouldn't have been long and she wudda been on the ground anyway.... ::) ::)

Whew!!!
What a read.
From cuttin a huge Redwood, to a Peterson demo day, to a blow up girl, to a dead thing stuck to a log!  I need a minute to take it all in!

Well, I'm jealous.
I'm not going to the Shootout, can't make it to the Pig Roast, and can't even get to the greatest Redwood Vs Sawmill showdown WI ever seen!

But hey, in all seriousness, this thing has turned out fantastic.  It sounds like so many FF members are going to make the journey. Chris is pretty overwhelmed by the reaction so far and for once he's actually looking forward to his 18 hour flight and multiple security checkpoints!

What a cool offer from Mike as well.  Rust Reaper Rocks!

I'm with you Raider, I hope the weather is good too, can't have Chris catching a cold before the shootout!!!

John (and others interested).
There is a Days Inn near the intersection of Hwy 51 and Hwy 12 that is a couple miles from the log site. The Zoo is about 7 miles from there.
I'll attach a map that may show the Airport (1), the Staybridge Hotel (2), the Redwood Log (3), the Days Inn (4) and the Zoo (5)  The green line is the route between the numbers. The numbers start at the top left and circle clockwise, ending up at the Zoo (5).  (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10180/RedwoodLog_Map.JPG)

Don't know bout them shirts. Are they cleared for export or will I get stopped going back into Minnesota with one?  Oh well, probably get stopped anyway, Minnesota needs the money and them troopers think I drive too fast anyway.   :D

For those that have never been to Madison before, that old saying about "the shortest distance between two points is a straight line" just doesn't work in that town. You got to go the round about way.  :)

Well, I now have a madison LIbrary card!   No internet at the hotel.

Did I miss something?  The log is NOT located at 4430 Helgesen Road.  For anyone else who missed that, go East another 2-3 blocks then south on Daniels.  Cant miss the big piece of wood.   Since I THOUGHT I had Steves phone number, I did not bother to get it before I left....   1st mistake.   I didnt have it after all.  Wellllll, I found the rigging company, got ahold of the operator, and he told me where it was.  Location solved.

We are at a super hotel.  Theres a BBQ grill and big out door seating area.  We have a suite with a frig and oven and eating area.   Cold beer and hot steaks?   I havent heard from anyone here, so dont know where they are working on lies and strategies for tomorrow.

We are right near the Old Town cheese and beer place, so if you guys are within walking distance let me know.   Otherwise I guess we'll see everyone tomorrow.

We are looking forward to the challenge, I have delegated myself to photographer (so I dont have to work hard). I will make sure that I have it when they cut them slabs anyway ;D.

After that we came back and rehydrated at the hotel for awhile just after we took Chris to check out the log.  We have a ton of photos to post at some point and will have a ton more. Its to hard to post right now as greg has zero software on this computer to do the job however I did do this one one line. Its of the heart attack hamburger attack crew. :)

It should be getting dark there by now.  They may still be sawing (or eating ;D).

The job is done. Beautiful day and plenty of redwood sawdust for all. There were some differences of opinion over which color of chainsaw trimmed that red log best as it took a lot of shaving to get it to fit, but we got er done.  Sorry, no internet connection on site and when I left the boys were picking up and they are probably having refreshments now.

Just a pit stop on the road home for me, so more details to follow.

One thing we didn't have today, was access to the internet and FF. Here is a pic of the remaining crew after the log was completely sawn. What a bunch today, and some DanG good fun, all I can say.  More pics comin. Husband, Burlkraft, and Jeff (with some awesome help of course) had the sawin of a 6' (almost 7') diam log that turned out to be almost 22' long down to a smooth operation. By 6 pm, all done.

Chris walking the redwood after helping cut the end off thr log. We bopped 2 foot off each in order to get the log inside the mill. The ATS is designed to saw 4 foot in diameter and 20 foot log.  Turns out this log was 6' 10" and 21.5 foot long!!

Ya'll need to get over to the Sawmill and Woodlot thread and get signed up if you don't have a supscription yet. You not only get the deal they set up for us, but Walter has asked me to write a story about the redwood cutting for the July issue. Corley5 climbed up the ladder and took a turn sawing for a bit and now has two new goals in life he says. First, to find himself a supply of Redwood Logs, and second, to get a Peterson mill to saw them up with.  He loves his Corley mill, but she just aint up to the task of sawing logs like this one. :)

Title: Re: Peterson Demo Day ...With A Real Peterson Guy

Because the sawdust was blowing so bad at the end of the log. It worked better to walk the wood a few feet to the side for them.

Here is a much clearer photo of what was on the plaque that had accompanied the log as it toured around Madison. We heard stories about it having been cut for a century or even two centuries ago, but if the plaque is accurate, logic tells me it was cut around 1960.   :)

Title: Re: Peterson Demo Day ...With A Real Peterson Guy

For sure we did take that into account. You notice the guys sawing were not in the sawdust......just the ones offbearing.  Now, don't think for a split second that it wasn't planned that way.  ;D

But everyone had a taste of the sawdust once in awhile. Wyatt took the brunt of it, but kept on truckin.

Note the stump diameter was 10 ft 7 inches and this log was only 6 ft 10 inches. So this was not a butt log, but was a ways up the tree. It did have some branch stubs so it may have been the third 20 ft log taken from that tree.

I suppose some of the foresters could probably calculate just how high up in the tree this log came from.  ???

Now pull that side in, and wrap it twice around.
Slip that up, on that side there.
Now, beenthere you,
step through that loop and I'll,
pull this one up over,

When we were about 2 thirds through the log, we took a short break for a photo op and got a few people to climb in da log. We did have as many as 30 folks there at one time, and I know we could have fit 50 or more on the log at this point as we only had 2 rows and could have fit 4, but this is what we got for that moment in time.  :)   Looks like the young feller manning my camera was not our main focus. There should be more photos of this out there on other cameras. :)

Well after another delema with the delta airlines I made it to bangor. (via Portland then a 2 hour taxi ride)
I even fond a converter so now I can charge all my electrical equipment and keep in touch with you all.
Photos are looking good there people, I have never seen so many cameras in one spot! That poor kid that had about 6 hanging of him for a while there.
Yep, Steves "recap"photo. You look quite relaxed there ;D
Nice looking grain there Jeff, it is real cold and wet up here as well in maine.
Thanks to all you FF guys out there who made my stay in WI enjoyable and memorable, espically Steve, Jeff, Greg, "Thee Bob", and Kent.

Not to worry, we had that covered.  :) Corley5 and Beenthere made and installed several chucks to prevent the log from moving. :)  I've been awhile getting to posting these photos as I was sure Greg needed some time to forget about running a Stihl before I reminded him again.  :D

Yep. Y'all thought of everything. The only good news left is to post that because of the demonstration, Peterson sold a mill. I plan to take care of that myself hopefully; All I need is for Texas Ranger to find us a BFTR (Big Fat Texas Redwood) somewhere's in Tejas so's I can tell the missus we have to buy a swingmill from those brilliant Kiwi's across da pond.

In fact, for the first time since I started watching the Amerca's Cup over 20 years ago, i am pulling for Emirates Team New Zealand (to come in second behind behind BMW Oracle Racing of course)! ;)

Ya mean Corley5 didn't like this big Stihl saw and bar?  ;D ;D
I think he maybee was dreamin this log was standin on end, and he was dropping all 270 + feet of it.  :)
When the right chain finally arrived for this big saw, things started happenin pretty fast then. A few minutes and the frame was set up, and the saw rig mounted on the tracks. Each piece of the frame easily carried or handled by one person. Having Chris there to point out the right way to do things, was great and perfected the demonstration.

Note the limb stub just to the left and above Corley5's head. Indication this was a log further up in the tree, like 50' or more.

That redwood log is still giving up lumber.  :)   Today Tammy and I resawed some 8 inch cants that corley5 brought home.  We also flattened out his slab that was cut off the side of the log so as the slabber could start slabbin.  We had to trim the edges down on the slab so it would go between my guides. It was still a tight squeeze where we had to make a couple "adjustments" as we sawed the length of the slab.  :)That redwood sure do saw nice though.  :)

Hi All, I thought you might enjoy a small addendum to the tale of the Wisconsin Redwood.

I met "The Bob" a couple months ago thru Stan Peterson, a mutual friend. This past Saturday my friend Stan and I started a refurb project on my old starcraft walleye boat which needed seats, we decided to go see if Bob had something suitable. After digging around for a few minutes Bob spins around and got a big smile going... 'how about Wisconsin redwood' says he.... he marches us out to his storage tent and shows us this slab about the size of a queen size matress... told us the story of the 'Wisconsin Redwood' and said we could find all the info via online search. We dragged that slab out and into the shop where we had a great time slicing out enough to do our seating job. I am attaching a picture now of the work we completed yesterday, will finish up next weekend.

(btw, the flooring is cedar  ;D)

I'm finally using some of my stash from the Wisconsin Redwood.  My nephew asked me to make him a coffee table for his first apartment.  I decided to do it out of some pine from our cabin up north.  He loves it up there and goes whenever he gets a chance.  I found some old steel machine legs half buried out back, so I sandblasted them and painted them for the table.  I used live edge pine and added a center strip of the redwood.  For the final touch, I glued a pocket on the  underside and inserted a picture of the plaque Burlkraft got with the log.  It tells the history of it.  Now when he has friends over, he's got a story to tell.(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11664/2011-10-01_17-36-44_196.jpg)

yup, there are crosspieces underneath ... the slats are screwed to the crosspieces (ripped them to about 1x2's the height should be the same as the alum ribs), just one fore and one aft,  It's all cedar so the crosspieces willl flex and we added a short 4x6 post under the center seat, it  pushes the floor down in the center and hold it in place. I used to have a piece of plywood laid in there that worked just fine for me but my buddy Stan wanted to step up to something nicer to match up with the new seats. ;D
