Dear Gentleman
I am looking to make contact with someone that has used the norwood MX 34 mill. I have done some research but with out seeing the mill first hand and operating am un decided. I found out that the mill shown on the video has the 23 hp on it not the 16 and was disapointed in the mislead also i have been told of a 36 hour assembly time and the carriage not as stong as others also the cable system might freeze in cold weather.
We will be using the mill to cut hardwood and pine flitch for our houses.
If anyone has this model I would look forward to some first hand advice

welcome to the forum.  cable assembly freezing? you must be talking about the head raise cables? i have a similiar system on my mill and that has not been an issue, but it is inside and our winters never get below -10 here. dont know about the motor issue. i do know that generaly less power means a slower cut.   happy hunting.   pc

I've got mine half-assembled.  A buddy showed up to help me with two air wrenches and a compressor.  Things really took off then.  Follow the manual directions EXACTLY!  (It's in the box labled "MAN").  It looks like a terrific manual mill.

The Norwood MX34 is a pretty new mill. Don't be disheartened if you don't get a bunch of immediate replies to your questions from owners because there isn't a great deal of them on the forum. YET. :)  If you have any questions I am sure Norwood will answer them for you and we can point you to Norwood reps and owners of other models right here on the Forestry Forum.

Who was pointing out faults to you?  I suspect it was not a current Norwood owner. In fact I'd bet on it.

Hello Scott

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your interest in Norwood mills.  The LumberMate Pro MX34 was released in early 2010 so no units have even had an opportunity to freeze!  Norwood has been manufacturing mills since 1992 and we've never heard of cables freezing – and we've got LOTS of sawmills milling in some of the harshest environments!   We offer the V-Twin 23hp on the LumberMate Pro so we can definitely get you set up with a Pro equipped with that power-plant.  As for the carriage, it's really solid.  Of course, seeing is believing.  We just finished a super busy run of tradeshows over the past few weeks to give people the opportunity to see the LumberMate Pro MX34 and the new LumberLite ML26 in action.  If you weren't able to attend one of those shows, please feel free to call us toll free at 1-800-567-0404 and we can try to find an owner near you who is open to demonstrating his mill.

Have a great day,
Mike@Norwood

Hi Scott,
I think you will find that many mill makers have a low price base mill and then add options and then increase the price Norwood will not be alone in that. There are some manual mills with 9 hp motors and I imagine that they cut lumber fine, just slower.  The advanatage to assemblng your mill is that you will  know it inside out.
As for strength it is a similar design to the Norwood LM 2000 that I have which seems to be plenty strong . There are probably stronger mills but they would be heavier and more expensive and harder to move around. I move mine around with a 4 wheeler. For personal sawing that would be plenty good enough. It might not be the best mill for some things but I cant afford a a hydraulic mill so for me the Norwood is  fine.
Ive watched the promotinal video of the MX 34 and really like  the looks of the  push bar for moving the mill through the log it looks like it would be pretty easy to push and it is adjustable for a persons height. That looks like it might be an improvement over the LM 2000.
Dont know anything about cables freezing.

I have a Norwood LM2000, absolutely great mill, and I just checked out the new one at a show. You will love it. They upgraded a few things and generally improved many things, and it looked great to me. If you like I can run my fully assembled and optioned 23 HP 21'  LM2000 over to you in exchange for yours ;D :D Enjoy, they did a great job on the new one.

Hello Scott

We'd be more than happy to search our referral list to see if we have an owner within close proximity to you who has given us permission to share his name and number. All we need is your telephone area code. You could either send me a message or call our customer service toll-free at 1-800-567-0404.

Just so you're aware, we do have the LM Pro MX34 tradeshow sawmill at our Buffalo warehouse. We're located just across the street from the Buffalo International airport. It's indoors so we can't demonstrate the sawmill in action, however, it would be my pleasure to walk you thru the sawmill and answer any questions you may have.

Please feel free to stop by. We're open Monday-Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm EST.

Thank you kindly,

Mike@Norwood

Hi Mike@Norwood
If I drive to Buffalo and pick up a mill will there be any shipping charges for getting it to the warehouse?  Or am I right in assuming that I do not have to add any shipping onto the price list I have?
The new mill looks great by the way.  The only thing that worries me is all those cables.  On my last Norwood mill I finally disconnected the throttle cable and just turned up the throttle at the engine before each cut.

Ironwood

I put a locking PTO cable from the Buyers Catalog, BEST money I ever spent on the mill. I just mounted it in one of the holes (the ones that decend in size) in the 1/8 plate in front of the "push bar". Great addition to a great mill. That was the biggest issue w/ the mill. The new MX34 will be switching to a weaker spring on the "Throttle bar", make sure you get that weaker sprinig, the first one was WAYYY too stiff for a day of milling.

I just finished assembly of mine today, me and my friend put about 10 hrs in it together and then I put about 4 hrs more by myself. The mill looks and feels mighty solid to me. I really like the 23hp v twin , the pushbar and letting it go at the end of the cut and everything slowing down while i take the board off, the one turn handle giving me a 1"  board and the easy to use logdogs. If anyone is in the west jacksonville fl area and wants to come out and have a look give me a holler.

Mike@Norwood

Good morning,

Log Master, you're absolutely right – Norwood doesn't charge any shipping if you pick-up at either of our warehouses in Buffalo, NY or Kilworthy, Ontario.

If you have any questions about the cables or any other features, we're here to help.  As always, please feel free to call toll-free 1-800-567-0404

Why did you purchase the mill from Northern?  The basic mill is the same price as directly buying from Norwwod, but every option is more $ when you buy from Northern.  I found my last Norwood in the Northern catalog, but went straight to Norwood to buy because they offered me a larger engine and cheaper shipping!
Either way I think you will love the mill.  I put mine together over a 2 week period working an hour or so each day when I had Time.  It is daunting when you first see it since mine came in 47 different boxes including some accessories.
Catskillpond What options did you order with your mill?

catskillpond

Northern was cheaper on the shipping and if we ordered from norwood i have to pay a canadian service charge which was 4percent . Were going to build our own trailer under it trying to find torsion axles that will slip into square tubing any suggestions are welcome. I would like to thank all who have responed its been a great help and look forward to the future. We build and maintain pond and lakes last year we drained a 78 acre lake which was cleared in the late 1800s and in the deep end were approx 60 logs some with widths up to 5 foot we pulled one out and it seemed as sound as the day it was cut so we are going to pull some up that we drug to the shallows and cut into them. I watched a show on the discovery channel awhile back on harvesting timber out of the Great Lakes any advice will be welcome

torsion axles , I bought some rated at 950 lbs. each for my manual saw. It has about 17 total feet in length minus tounge. 3" angle welded on top of 2x6x 1/8" wall tubing. The mill and all isnt really all that heavy. Well anyway one of the torsion axles settled and it made the trailer set low on one side. Disgusted to saw the least. Removed all the metal and rubber around the axle then welded it to a 2" pipe for a new dropped axle, added two new leaf springs and its exactly what I needed. I am not saying that there are some more expensive with greater capacity that will proably work just fine, because there are. Hate to see all the time and money spent and not being satisfied. Good luck bg
