Not at our place luckily...

We were away for the weekend, and there was a storm warning in place for the whole of the Nth Island. Of course we drop Lara off with her grandmother, at the only place in the country that actually got hit bad.  :o

Some pictures

5ft dbh pine tree at Lil's uncles.

Same Uncle's farm shed

Roof of said shed, and what's left of the water pump shed.

His maize crop, was almost due to be harvested too.

The sort of damage it did to small pine plantations

Another Uncles fishing boat. The power pole (and attached live wires are not standard) Lara was at Nana's house across the street.

Local cemetery. Lil's grandparent's headstone seems undamaged despite being buried under a BIG Norfolk Pine

More fallen pines, luckily fell away from the graves, onto the road.

More trees on the hill behind the cemetery.

Local tree service /logging contractors starting to take out some of the hazard leaners to make it safer to clean up the mess.

The road to the rubbish transfer depot. Where everyone is going to turn up tomorrow to dump the debris. The guys are working the trees leaning over the road first.

No damage here at home, only 45mins drive, but Lara will have some stories for school tomorrow...

When compared to the Tornadoes and multiple deaths that some areas have been experiencing it's not so bad. It was just a bit freaky waking up in the morning, turning on the TV and seeing the live from the scene report, being shot just around the corner from where we had dropped Lara off  :o

A couple of cell phone calls reassured us that all was well. All that damage (Thousands of trees down), but luckily no injuries. Just a huge mess to clean up.

I'm guessing most of the pines will be salvaged for pulp logs, at least pay for the clean up.

Well we were there again today, cleaning up some fallen trees in Lil's Mum's garden.

The Uncle over the road still has NO POWER, after a week.

They replaced the broken pole this afternoon, but the fitting on the house has been damaged when the wire ripped off. The line crew can't fix that. They got an electrician out, but he's run out of the junction boxes, as had the local wholesaler   :-\ Just had to replace so many in the last week.

Not faulting the line crews, they have bought in extra crews from out of town, have 200 guys working on the lines. Just so many down over such a wide area it's taken over a week to get them rebuilt. Some lines had dozens of poles taken out as shelter belts fell on them. We passed some Wellington Power trucks that were 150 miles from home.

I have got some nice little cedar and peach wood turning blanks though :) Wasn't keen to tackle that 4ft dia pine today, but I suspects it's still laying where it fell.

They are still pulling logs out of the storm area, with pretty much every logging crew and truck in the lower 1/2 of the Nth Island.

270 guys, 80 truck loads a day passing though town...
