How well does a swingmill slabber attachement work?

I guess I was wondering if the rpm difference in the swingmill versus a chain saw makes the swingmill slabber cuts slower than a chainsaw slabber?

Thanks for your help.

there is a sprocket that attaches to the hub of the mill, i have an 11 tooth ri sprocket on mine, the lower speed dosent affect it the slabber on mine will outcut any chainsaw slabber around.

the reason its quicker is you have so much more power to play with.

I had a slabber on my Peterson.
It worked great. I didn't notice a significant drop in chain speed from my big saw.

You soon find the forward speed that works best for what you are slabbing

When we slabbed the big redwood we timed the slabbing process.

I don't remember what time was tho..... ::) ::) ::)
Why not just 1 pain free day?

weisyboy

i have timed my saw.

it will do a 10' long 3' wide slab in QLD Bluegum - forest red gum is just under 1 minute.

cutting softer stuff like sawmp cypress and camphor-laurel it flys threw as fast as i can push it.

Wow that fast. What chain are you running?
The one I have works good but is alot slower.

Yeah, that is fast!

Please let teenswinger know how to go faster.  I pay him by the hour when he slabs for me. :D :D
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

weisyboy

its all in the chain.

firstly chuck those 5 skip chains to buggery.

you want 3 skip full chisel chain.

i make my own from standard chain.

i get my angle grinder and cut off 3 cutters and there depth gauges.

then i take the depth gauges on the remaining teeth down heaps.

sharpen it to 15* with a 7/42 file.

2 blokes should be able to lean on the mill and not have to push hard.

Captain

As previously mentioned, the lower RPM is accomodated by a larger drive rim.  However, in terms of surface feet per minute, my swingmill arbor running just under 2000 RPM with a 13 spline rim is much slower than a 10,000+RPM chainsaw with an 8 spline rim.  It does make it nice to have a rigid rolling frame on wheels to slab with.  If you think it pushes hard, you need slabberdrive....

weisyboy

i did a small slabbing job this arvo.

we cut 20 - 2'wide x 10' long silky oak slabs in an hour.

that included rolling in 3 logs.

that was with a standard chain (not skip) reshaprened.

So I need to find a 13 or 14 tooth sprocket that fits my hub.  Where do you find these?

By the way Captain, you signature link is broken.

dont know about your saw but tehy are avalable from lucas for there mills.

lucas mills run a harvester sprocket so if you can find out what your hub profile is you can probably pick one up.

Captain

If you had a Peterson style blade arbor, I could help you out.  I think I have probably 5 left.  Your Brand X which utilizes a Lucas blade should certainly be able to use the same (Lucas) parts.  Call Bailey's, I bet they can help you out.  They also sell harvester sprockets.

You're right about he signature, I'll have to take care of that.
