I use spar urethan that has UV protection.  It will peel in a few years and be breached if the wood splits.   It is great to use on a flat surface, and then every few years, I run the piece through the magic eraser (planer).  and then refinish.

The mill has been down for a month. Couldn't order parts the first 2 weeks because someone stole 2 checks from my mail.
That's another story.
Waiting on parts now
Been doing firewood
I get tree service firewood, I have changed my set up to get faster at it. I have more work to do .
I don't have a log lift but I'm getting it done.

Well it's unusual that I am disagreeing with Don, this may be a first in fact, but if you put a finish on it, it will hold. My process is to mill, then air dry out of the sunlight. It turns brownish and dull, then I skip plane it and stick it in the rack. When I make something, I plane and cut it for the project and that brings the fresh color back. Once built I put a finish on it like polyurethane and although it may get darker, it will still be red. The sapwood turns a little more yellow, but still a nice contrast.

The quick answer, yes.  Makes no difference whether alone or with help.

I use a 6" RV stool so stepping on and off is no issue.  I often sit side saddle on the seat.

Interesting
I'm on a budget
Is there low cost lodging around the area ?
We have a truck with a cap .
It all depends on if I can find a dog sitter for Piney

That wood looks good to me, dry it and plane it. Was this dead for a while? It has some nice spalting.

MM,  Would you still like it if you worked alone?  Having to get off and on seems tiring.
