   I'm wondering if it is a harmless Hog-nosed snake. They puff up and act mean and if that fails to scare you off they bite themselves and play dead. After you have one in captivity a while they quit the playing possum act.

Indeed, hognosed snake, harmless and a good thing to clear up smaller vermin.   Don't see many of them anymore.  For those who don't know them, they swell up their bodies and "hood" as a defense mode, and like WV says,, play dead if irritated enough.

    Dad used to call them a Spreadin' Adder. He used to think they were deadly and playing possum would have worked if he had not chopped them up. He was not real tolerant of any snake and Mom was likely worse - like the old lady with the club on the BC comics strip.

Cool snakes.  They calm down pretty quick after you handle them.  Seen more than one turned loose on the field trip bus.
