Hello! I've been lurking here a while now, finally figured I'd ask if Anybody's got a master 5 skidder, or one nearby that they could take a few pictures of?
I'm looking for a picture of the belly, from the front or rear and a picture of the operators cockpit (?) google searches have been fruitless in these areas.
I'm on a 5 year plan for building my own little skidder and the master 5 looked to be the closest to what I have in my head, closer than the gafner and the old Garretts.

I see a few old "bones" on CL.The owners may be able to help you out.There are some here who are pretty fearless when it comes to rebuilding old iron.

Bob, that's the one that got me curious. It's 2 hours from me otherwise id go check it out.
Mike the samurai is doing a good job but I'm greedy. Dads rig is progressing but slowly. My welder went down for a couple months and that put a stop to all progress until I had it fixed.

Ah that stinks. I just got my welder wired up at the new place after being without it for a year. It was like losing an arm! Fabbing on a patch of mud now, youd think i was in :maine:

Hi guys, I think you might have been referring to this old girl. It's proudly in my possession now! I'm in Pittsfield, Maine. It appears to be almost all original. I know where this another one south of me in central Maine that is running and used seasonally. And I believe I know where this another one parked in the woods that hasn't moved in 15+ years.

I'll get some pics of belly pan and cockpit and post them later! I have some digital copies of parts manuals etc that might be useful as well. Some pretty good pics and diagrams in there.

Going to be used full time?
Not full time, but for our farm woodlots and where it makes sense. Have other equipment for hard and heavy work. I decided to bring some wood down unlimbed for our ND dairy goats. It think they think the skidder is like a mobile food vendor now.. HAHA.

Thanks for the pictures miketclew ! That's a sharp looking machine! Looks a lot nicer than it looked on the ad! Looks like it wasn't used too hard at all!
Does the front axle articulate or does it do that at the rear? I'm guessing that the Lower lever in the dash is the Transmission and the lever on the right side of the seat is hi-low or reverse?
Yah, there is a cradle pin on the front axle, and then standard centerpins for steering articulation. Back axles are fixed. I'm thoroughly impressed with this little machine. At roughly 7' 2" wide, and 14 feet long, it really gets around for thinning nicely. Working it right now in easily 16-20 inches of snow. We're in the process of getting another foot or two now.
Yes, Transmission R 1 2 3 on dash. Reverser on right hand side of seat. H/L on left hand side of seat.
Left foot clutch - Right foot brake and throttle. I'm trying to get an operators manual from Pettibone now. I have a parts repair/service for the machine, wisconsin v461/462/465 and gearmatic model 9. Would be nice to have them all :)
That skidder actually has a V4 wisconsin in it?
Sure does. There were two engine options for this model/serial number. I'll attach the flyer that pettibone sent me for this machine.
Is there room for a chevy 4.3?
Not in my fuel budget there isn't :'(!! It's fairly spacious in there, the biggest concern I have would be room for radiator. The wisconsin is air cooled.
I'm going to do my best to keep the wisconsin going, but have been thinking about re-powering with a diesel since prior to bringing it home.
A friend of mine has one that is diesel powered, I need to take a closer look at it. My uncle also owns one - I believe it's the same model. It's still parked in the woods where it was left 15 years ago :(

Wow, it shows the 4 cy jimmy for the diesel option. I assume a 453, and they have it turning 2600 rpms, they wind that puppy up.
I have to wonder if a guy needed to swap out one of those wisconsins for a diesel, how much trouble it would be to put an air cooled duetze in one.
Starmac, reading my mind (The duetz air cooled that is)! Not sure what the horse power options are. I figure 50-60 hp would be plenty from a diesel.
I doubt the wisconsin puts out any more than that. I don't even know what the duetze is rated at, but guys that have them in skidders sure seem to like them.
The f3l912 deutz I have is 37 or 47 kw which is 49 or 63 hp. Quiet, and easy on fuel.
The 4.3 in my rock junk is pretty reasonable on gas probably 5 or 6 gallons a day. But I'm usually chugging it around below 2000 rpm. If it was injected it'd probably be better.
I am thinking a 4.3 would have to be kept wound up to have the needed torque in a skidder, but I don't know what their torque is, so just guessing.

Most of these came along in second gear, low range. 3.34 in the 4 speed, 2.62 in the transfer, 5.38s in the diffs chugging along at 12 or 1500 rpm. Granted I was taking one at a time but still, most of those skidder axles are 20:1 between the diffs and the hubs
4.3 is a fairly torquey engine. Another cheap reliable piece would be a ford straight six but room might not be available.
For cheap diesels, if you cant find or cant justify the premium expense of detroit/duetz/cummins stuff.. id consider a mercedes om617 from the 240D and 300D cars. Theyre 3.0 inline 5 turbos with a bosch MW pump. Very good engine.

Quick search says 44kw which converts to 59 hp and 201 kg which converts to 639 lbs. that seems high because I can shuffle mine around on the shop floor ok.
Chapman services over in Troy might have one if you want to put a tape measure to one.
I got $2500 for a 4cyl version. Theyre right up there with 4BT pricing.
