Hi!
I want to buy this Timberjack 240 D. It should be built in 1987, has a Perkins-engine (6.354).
In Austria we don´t have so much experience with Timberjack skidders and so I ask you to help me in this case. Please tell me if the building year 1987 can be ok and if there are some things on this machine I have to check before I buy it.
If you take a look on the pictures, please tell me if there is something strange with the machine.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Welcome to the site.  I don't have this one but several users do and I'm sure you'll get some feedback.

Questions:  Hours?  Do they have maintenance logs/history?  Is the winch working?  Can you try it for a day or two?

Bumping this back up, don't some of you guys have a TJ240?

@hawlem Just a hint too regarding the Timberjack.  Loggers just say TJ240.  If you search the site for TJ240 you'll find lots of threads mentioning them.  I don't personally use one but if you send a call out like I did for you the member is more likely to respond.  Ask nicely, people are good on this site.

I have a TJ240E, early '80s I think. It is a hobby machine for me, I use it for firewood and trails on my own property. It is a great machine, wide and stable and is more machine than I really need but the price was right and it was close by, I have zero regrets.
Apparently there are parts still readily available, the only parts I have needed were for the gearmatic winch, no problem finding them. Other than that I had to repair a leaking cylinder, but thats just regular stuff. About the only thing I'm not crazy about is the racket from the 453 detroit, but it is good on fuel.
Don't know if any of that helps you, that looks like a nice machine you are looking at, if those are forestry tires they would be worth as much as the machine here!!
The controls in the cab look the same as mine except for the winch controls.
Can't comment on the Perkins engine, but it looks like it has a standard transmission, I like the simplicity of that. Would this be a work machine or hobby?

Hawlem, more specific to your questions, that machine looks good in the pics, but more important is the actual condition beneath, are pins and bushings in mid-ship and blade good?
As has been asked, does winch work?  Engine and transmission sound ok? Check all oils for metal/water etc (all planetaries, diffs, transfer case, transmission, winch, hydraulic tank). The only way to know for sure is to use it if you are able to.
The TJ240 in its various editions is/was highly regarded as a very good machine in its day, however these days is not very suitable for commercial production, at least in my part of the world .

We have a Perkins in a TJ1210B with 15k that's never given us an issue, heard of some of them going 30 to 40k without being touched.

There is probably some official (man/ woman or alphabet soup) from Brussels coming in a year or two to chop a hole in the Timberjack's engine block with an oxy-acetylene torch.

Might need to see if you can put a Stage V engine in the Timberjack.  Lots of DEF with FPT.

Theyll be some alphabet soup with an oxy acetylene rig pretty far up their rear end if they come here tryin it.  The brussels sprouts can mind their dang business.

Good morning!
Yesterday I have bought this 225A. A nice machine I think. ;-) Younger than the 240D I want at first to buy and in a very good condition with a Deutz-engine. 8) and 8000 working hours.
Are there any problems with this 225A, I mean like weak spots? The axles are stronger than from the older 200-series I think. What I have seen there is no lever on the transfer case / gearbox to swich of the winch. It´s a Timberjack transfercase. Is this not a problem for the winch because I can´t swich of the winch-drive if I´m driving long distances.

So I hope I have bought a good machine! ;-)

I couldnt tell ya about the winch but congrats on a fine looking machine.

Nice, with chains too!  The Deutz engine is fuel efficient, that is a good thing.

What sort of logging are you doing?  Not using a forwarder?

Nice Timberjack, that Duetz is a very torquey motor. I had the same machine a few years back and you have the WR5 planetaries which are Eatons and very strong. Still wish I had mine, now its a 240b model with a Cummins. You will be happy with that machine though. Nice find and clean. Good Luck and Welcome.

I would be finding the 3d scanning equipment to datarise all the skidder measurements and finding a few engineers to put a modern engine in the skidder

Look at the dollar value of the perfectly road worthy diesel cars that are being in the scrap heap. Old skidders will be on the collection list somewhere.

In Scotland the logger needed a tier 4 in the forest to operate and the tier 3 was sold.

Deutz and Stage V. What You have to know about it   (should be a compliant diesel on a shelf somewhere)

Good morning from Austria!
@ David-L: do you have any problems with your TJ225? The Eaton axles with the WR5 planetaries are better than the "old" Rockwell axles?
My father was working 20 years ago with the same machine and he was very lucky with it, because the engine has a lot of power and he never had problems with the machine.

California has started that a few years ago with equipment in the woods and the rest of the PNW has followed suit, the days of simple and easy are quickly going out the window.

Well, its not like any of us are organized to offer much resistance. Same with trucks, manufacturing etc.

@hawlem just to help you makes sense of this thread...topic moving around it is because some worry that we won't be able to run old diesel engines here.  Out of curiosity is that an issue in Austria?

Being air cooled its good to know your temp gauge is working and the fan belt has a emergency switch on it which is suppose to turn on a red light in cab. I also would tie a piece of foresters flagging tape to the left front side panel where there air comes out halfway up that mesh panel. If the fan is blowing air through the cylinder jugs that flagging tape is flying straight out. I made sure I could see it from the cab and is more foolproof that the gauges in my opinion. If you were in the states I would be trying get that from you. Nice looking Timberjack. keep those jug fins clean too in the summer and if you have a leaky fire ring on top of the jug fix it as it collects dust as it gets oily and stops air circulation. more pics please sir.

That is the light comes on when the belt brakes and activates the red light.

Good morning,

in Austria we are lucky that we not have this problems about the engines, but only at this kind of machine. Trucks and cars have this problems if they are to old. But if they have an official paper from the past as the vehicles were new, so you can drive with them also today.

Working machines like the Timberjack, a combine or a tractor don´t have this problems. But the European Union is working on something like that you have at the USA.

Today my brother and also my father are working the first day with the TJ225 in the forest to pull large oaks with arround 1m diameter.
They told me, that the winch is pulling in the rope and if they stop the winch, then the tree goes arround 10-20 cm back to the ground and then the brake of the winch is fix.
So what´s the reason for this and what can I do against?
Is there only some air in the hydraulic system for the winchbrake or is there something to adjust?
Looking forward reading something from the TJ-specialists! :)
Thanks in advance.

Emissions legislation (laws/ rules) is often by stealth/ in secret.

UK was still part of Europe in 2018 (so were still on the European environmental programs)
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/691313/improving-air-quality-non-road-mobile-machinery-condoc.pdf

page 10/11
"1.10 Some of the new requirements introduced by EU #2016/1628 include:

- procedures defined for taking a decision to withdraw the type
approval of an engine that presents a risk to the environment or
public health."

There appear to be exemptions that can be applied for.

This interim document was also about giving UK officials the right to go onto property/ land to find old engines etc.  Looks like a 2021? introduction for this set of rules for some parts of Europe, probably being discussed behind closed doors in other parts.

It is the timing between the winch clutch application/release and the winch brake release /application
It is set by adjusting the brake cylinder travel to between 9/16  inch and 5/8 inch.
Two adjusting nuts and the rod is held from turning by a  milled flat.
I m quoting fro an original shop service manual.
You will have to convert to metric if you don't have and imperial ruler
hope this helps
cheers
